Default Pro Paint Job Cost?

I plan to outsource a pro paintjob for the following:

- Engine hood exterior (to remove razor scratches in the clearcoat due to improper removal of shipping film).

- Engine hood interior/engine side - same color/finish as exterior

- Vert trunk interior side - same color/finish as exterior

- Caravaggio spoiler - same color as exterior

- Painted lower rear fascia - black

I have a MSG verte and would be matching that paint. Before I start shopping local shops for this work, what do you believe is a target cost estimate?

Thanks. I agree this should be simple. Hardest part is probably matching of the Spiral Gray Metallic. I'm just trying to obtain some cost estimates based on similar work being performed so I know a target price range going in.

just find the right shop and look around. I was quoted $1800 to fix 3 scratches and fill in the alignment holes so I can remove the front C5 badge. they said in order to do all that they'd have to take the car apart and repaint whole panels at a time.

I had them do some warranty work on another car, their work is excellent. but I was laughing for days after they showed me a quote for $1800 to repair a couple scratches.

I agree, some shops are really getting up there in price. I got an estimate of $3653 to repaint two rocker panels and parts of the rear fenders (wanted to clear up some rock chips) on my C6Z. Good grief... I could put myself through paint school, buy my own equipment and a spray booth and do it myself for less than that! (well ok maybe not... but still...)

A few years back, I took my C5Z to a shop to get an estimate on the front bumper and hood (again, road rash). Came back at something like $1500.

Methinks I'm in the wrong business...

Good luck with your repaint, and post pictures afterwards!

Believe it or not it's not as easy as it sounds, especially with todays paint systems. Prep is 90% of a great paintjob, prep takes time! Whether removing and reinstalling a hood, spoiler, quarter panels, etc. Color matching takes time. Doing multiple sprayouts on test panels to acheive the best match. If you are just panel painting it's even harder to match. More often than not you need to blend new paint into adjacent panels to get the desired match, panels with nothing wrong with them! Everything must be cleaned of waxes, grease, ARMOR ALL prior to sanding and again after to ensure a clean surface for the paint. Then depending upon the repair, you have multiple painting steps including primer, sealer, basecoat, and a clearcoat. Some colors ( Anniversary Red and MY) are tri-coats and add one more layer between the color and clear! Then you have the factory paint, which in this case has seen many years although may look great, that has faded from original color unknowing to most as it still shines and looks great!
Best option is an overall paintjob to get the best match. Unless it's a new car and that is not an option, it's the best way to GUARANTEE a perfect match as all parts painted same day, same temp, same humidity, and same batch! There are alot of variables in paint and doing it correctly. You WILL GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

So, what may sound like a high price to you may be the quote of a proffesional painter. Good luck and do your research on the shop. Make sure a high quality paint is used as well.(ex.) PPG, DuPont, ICI/NEXA, Glasurit, Sikkens, Diamont.

Don't forget about the EPA and their taxes and disposal fees for waste paint and thinners, all paper, tape, sandpaper as well.

Average wage for a painter is $20 an hour. The industry standard set by insurance companies is at $ 44/hr. The shops do indeed profit!
Speaking of, you can always find a professional painter that may work for a custom shop or dealership that has the ability to do it as a side job and save you capital.

Read some of the stories about bad paint job and it all goes back to poor prep. I would rather pay a bit more and receive a premium well prepped job than take a chance for a few hundred less. Good luck in finding the right spot.

tHIS IS ALL TRUE. My shop took the car all apart to paint in the
booth. The finished job looks like it came from the factory.
Price-$6000 and I feel like they gave me a good deal.
You get what you pay for--a good job does not come cheap.

Prices vary from state to state town to town and shop to shop!!! In my shop it varies. My customer tells me exactly he or she wants and we do the work. If its a driver it would be less detail work on the inside of hood and trunk than a show car, You get the jist of it. A ball park would be over $2,000.00 for this at a quality shop. Do your homework on your painter........ It makes a big differance who you choose!

EPA and insurance drive cost. Even with all the safe gaurds in place A paint and body shop is hit hard on Work comp. and liabilty Ins. Not to mention the EPA requirements.

I would have said $5k for the whole car and $2000-2500 for what it sounds like you want done.
