Lookin at a 99 Coupe w/ 41k on the clock.... The car is about 4hrs from me... When I went and drove it the other night I noticed that when I put it in reverse and backed up it kinda had a growl/noise like a brake drag in the rear end... I got out and looked underneath at it and it appears the drivers side axle seal may have a leak, it was dirty on that side but not wet and dripping... The car only makes the noise in reverse when you first start to back up. It does not do it while turning or going forward/
If I buy this car do I need to add fluid before driving all the way back home or will it be ok until I get there?
If it is an A4, automatic, it might be low on tranny fluid. If it is the read end, the axle seals give up over time, and they do leak. It is a know problem of C5s.
Being that you observed a noise . I would make it a pre condition of buying the car that the tranny & rear diff had proper fluids levels.
On the other hand, you can purchase the car & take care of the fluids before driving it home. It's your decission. Either way, I would make sure it's done before driving it home. It's one of those, better be safe than sorry deals. Start your car purchase out on the right foot.
Good luck.

to an extent. I would also make it a condition that the current owner let you get it checked out by a competent Corvette mechanic so you will know just what you are getting into.
