I have the cags but around town I hardly ever leave 4th...usually 1-2-3-4 going down the shore or up to Conn. is when I use 5th and 6th. No need for them unless you are doing over 60 I feel.

I have CAGS, but hardly ever notice and shift 1-2-3-4 as needed. On the rare occasion I pull 1-2 before the car thinks I should be ready, I just hold the clutch down an extra beat which lets the rpms drop enough to release the solenoid and then shift into second.

The cadence is the same for me as a double-clutch used with an un-synchronized transmission.

This practice of maintaining the shift pattern has served me well and has become second nature for me. I may shift sooner (1500 - 2k RPM) while accelerating slower than normal when traffic is light but I always maintain the shift pattern.

If I do (downshift) I'll maintain the shift pattern in reverse while attempting to bring the RPMs up to facilitate a smooth transition while downshifting.

I thought I had fun with a 4-speed '69 Vette I owned for over twenty years until I bought the 6-speed '99 Hardtop. This is fun.

I never worried about the bypass because my natural inclination is to go from 1 to 2 after the rpms are passed for the forced 1-4

My car had the eliminator when I bought it, but when in traffic around town I find myself skipping gears quite often. Usually 1-3 and then 4 or 5 depending on the situation. Sometimes I do 1-4. No real reason; just lazy I guess. I like to have the choice.

When I first installed my MGW, I found myself starting in 3rd on several occasions and shifting from 4th to 3rd when I was looking for 5th. Of course these occurences were not by choice.

A lot of unneeded RPM's you're using there!!! These cars have tremendous low end torque,,and will pull a high gear at pretty low RPM as long as you are not pulling hard or going up inclined road way!! Our town has the country's longest "MAIN STREET",,and a lot of it is pretty flat,,and can cruise at the 35 MPH speed limit in 6th!! Now I must add,, I've been driving stick shifts for a very LONG time,,and know how to listen to and feel the drive train,,and can tell if the motor is starting to "lug". You DO NOT try to accelerate at this low RPM,,you just maintain momentum with a feathered throttle. BUT you do not need to be doing over 60!!

I'm still running stock exhaust so I like to get the RPM up there to hear it sing.
I like hearing the pipes too ,,pretty often in fact!! BUT 3,000-3,500 is WAY past what the thread is about,,,3,500 ,,even in 2nd is WAY over city speed limits!! I'm talking when you are putting around in city traffic!! No real point in trying to wind it up!!

Not really going to hurt anything,,again just running higher RPM than necessary!! 4th is 1 to 1,,just like 4th in the old 4speeds. At the strip,,I was going through the traps in 4th at a tad over 110,,and has lots of tach to go(wasn't really looking down at over 110 to see exactly what RPM I was turning)!! So 50-55 is not a big deal,,just wasting gas is all!!

No you do not. You can eliminate CAGS with a tune, at least with EFI Live you can.

4th gear cruising at 50-60MPH is probably not as efficient as 5th gear. Try 5th at those speeds, the load difference is insignificant. 6th gear I only use at 60+MPH on expressway's.

i know it won't hurt anything but i run whatever gear gives me about 1500 or so when just cruising around. at 55 in 4th it's just a waste of gas.

At 55 I'd have been in 6th long before,,unless I was really stepping on it to get up to speed!!1500 in 6th will give you about 70-75!! As stated before,,the low end torque will pull higher gearing/low RPM quite well,,as long as you don't try to accelerate quickly or up an incline!! Within the given parameters,,you can loaf along in 6th quite well!!

I like to find a good medium between engine load and MPG. 6th gear at 50-60 can be tough on the motor on hills and passing. So I try to keep 6th for steady paces above 60. I'm just **** probably.

No you do not need a CAGS eliminator. You can use HPTuners, LS1 Edit or EFI live to disable CAGS. This can be done without touching engine parameters or a "tune".

shoot, when cruising around base in pensacola (which is pretty flat), i'll regularly do 30 in 5th & 40 in 6th... but then again, my 3.42s contribute a little to that possible 3.90s in the future
