That would seem very likely. Still, what an idiot to ruin the car.
Nope... rental car. Couple that rented it said they let someone they'd met in a bar wanted to drive it and they were sitting in the passengers seat. Per the local news.
Bartender says he asked the male, that would be the guy who rented the car, to leave for, well you can guess!

Here’s proof that high-end cars don’t do well in the surf.
Someone, perhaps a local brain surgeon or rocket scientist, decided to test a Corvette’s power by doing doughnuts in the sand on Pacific Beach Thursday night.
Surprisingly – not – the Corvette got stuck in the surf and ended up submerged knee-deep in the salt water.
The driver apparently thought the fiberglass-body of the Corvette would float like his surfboard.
Not quite.
A tow truck had to be called in after 9 p.m. to pull the car off the shore near Ocean Boulevard.
Everyone in the car left the scene before police arrived. It is unknown how many people were inside.

Hmmmm! Probably 1, but maybe 2. Of course with an idiot like this it could be more I guess. The worst of it is that the owner's insurance will probably pay the damages.
I can't believe someone would do this. All I need to do is drive my Vette by the beach and I have to clean my engine bay due to the sand on the road being sucked up through the radiator.
