I'm reading all these great thread on DD installations/modifications and keep scratching my head as to why GM even had a 1.5 din head unit as stock.
Has anyone ever seen a 1.5 din aftermarket head unit? Before I decided to go down the DD mod path, I checked out local automotive stereo stores, etc. Many DD NAV systems and many single din head units, however I never ran across a 1.5 din head unit. Do they even exist? If so, what features do they offer?
Pioneer makes/made one. It was an ok radio w/ CD but not much else. GM has done it for years.. and in many models. Really stupid.
There are a couple of cheap brands that make a single din radio w/ a 5" screen (Boss is one of them) which fits a 1.5 din opening. I had one for a while but finally went to a Pioneer flip out screen single din head unit. Sound is sooooo much better. I didn't want a DD set up. Pretty tough to go back to stock.
I understand the auto manufacturers began desigining their head units at 1.5 din to encourage buyers to upgrade their stock units instead of going aftermarket, however it seemed as though this backfired.
Since the 1.5 din is only slightly smaller than the double din, I'm surprised there are not more options available to fill the 1.5 din completely. You would think a smaller DVD/NAV screen would fit in nicely. Even without a NAV, perhaps a larger LED display.
