Default Replacing "magnetic shocks"

Mods: if this belongs in Tech, feel free to move it.

I've got an '03 with "selective ride". I'm not going to argue its merit, but personally I could do without it. Regardless, I've got a question.
My front left shock has been leaking... evidenced by the suspension bottoming out over speed bumps. My ECM hasn't yet sent any messages or codes, but I gotta believe they're comming.
I'm willing to abandon the SRC and replace the shocks with "non- magnetic". I'll do the mechanical work myself.
(1) What will it cost to get the ECM reprogrammed
(2) What shock would you recommend? It's my wifes car... enough said.

Yes, I've searched, bit the post all delt with performance upgrades.

Thanks,
Russ

do a search for "F45 delet". Best way I've found ( have done 3 vetts this way with NO PROBLEMS in 4+years) is to buy the resistors at Radio shack. Pick out the new shocks you want to use and install the resisators and the new shockls at the same time. Its a DIY and you don't need the dealer for anything.

If you have an 03, you likely have the F55 MSR option. Removal is possible however the procedure is different then the F45 option. I believe that a search for the F55 removal will get you what you want.

I too have the F55 MSR. I think they are wareing out too. Way too much "floaty" now in Tour mode. I will be replacing these wil Pfadt Coilovers.

Good Luck

A lot of our customers simply install the resistors and use the C6 Z06 shocks! That is a great upgrade for the money!

Thanks for all the responses.
Bluefire, you're right on. After further searching I see I'll need to find someone with a Tech II programmer. Then I'll "downgrade" to conventional shocks.

Yup all you need is the Tech II and I had Koni FSD shocks on before I went to PFADT Coil Overs and those shocks are very good for a daily driver, so good I put them on our base C6

Hay Gene, where does the resistor go ? Do you use a black slipe tie to hold the wire and resistor to the shock ? Or what do you do with the wire and what kind of resitor do I need and where can I get them ?
Thank you !

I have a 98 with F45, I had the system deleted for about $5O by my local tuner using Tech II. Another choice is purchasing stimulators for about $175, or you can go to radio shack and purchase resistors and wire it up yourself about $25. I went with Z06 shocks for about $300 shipped for Gene Culley, not to bad of a install. Good luck whatever route you decide.

Lift the rubber boot on the shock and pull out the shipping spacer-while your at it, check the others also-don't ask me how I know.

I might be old but I don't need stimulators...yet.

Here's the procedure for deleting the F55 option from a post copied a while back:

1. Hook up your Tech 2 (Driver's footwell), turn the car ON, make sure the module in the left rear storage compartment (pull back the velcro lining on the front of the compartment) is plugged in. DO NOT UNPLUG THIS MODULE

2. Now use the Tech 2 to delete the F45 option ( F55 option does not appear on the Tech 2 menu screen - SO - DELETE THE F45 OPTION
(use the screen captures - steps 2-14)

3. Save the new configuration

4. DO NOT TURN THE CAR OFF DO NOT REMOVE THE TECH 2 Go to the module in the rear of the car, unplug the GRAY connector - IT IS THE WIDEST ONE - leave the other 1 (F/45) or 2 (F/55) plugged in.

5. Turn off the car but LEAVE THE TECH 2 PLUGGED IN

6. Remove remaining plugs from module in the rear of the car - Never plug them back in again, if you do the F/45 turns on automatically.

7. Now the moment of TRUTH - Turn the car on and verify that the dreaded - MAX SPEED 80 MPH - is gone. This message was only present if you had already disconnected the shock sensors. Some people have had to disconnect their battery to allow the computer to reset to remove this message, but I would confirm with the Tech II that the F/45 was actually deleted first and if not reconnect everything and start again with step 1.

8. Unplug the Tech 2 - Get in the car and take it for a ride. Smile as you pass the DREADED 80 MPH.

With these instructions in their hands even the most inexperienced tech can do this. It took mine 5 minutes and they charged me $25. I would have spent much more time and effort getting and installing resistors.

If you haven't already changed your shocks drive home carefully as the shocks become very soft, not dangerous but as GM advises keep it under 80MPH.

The F55 system is VERY different from the F45 system that was available through the 02 model year. I have never seen a post where "simulators" or resistors worked. To the best of my knowledge (anyone that has actual experience other wise on the F55 RPO please post specifics) the only way to eliminate the F55 option is the procedure above.
