Default Need help with paint decision.

Last week a pick up truck either kicked something up or it came out of the bed of his truck and went across the hood of my vette. It put about a 1 inch long by about a little less than a 1/4 wide scratch in the hood. My problem is one body shop wants to pull the hood off and repaint the whole hood. Another wants to repair and blend in the paint. And do the whole hood with clear coat. And then a friend of mine told me about a kit called Dr. Color Chip. I am having a tough time deciding what to do because it is a 2000 with really good paint. It is the Bowling Green Metallic and has always been garaged. Thanks BOB

If it were my car, I would want the scratch sanded (or filled, depending on depth), spot primed, and color blended. The hood is a tough thing to repaint because it touched 5 adjacent panels (fenders, bumper, headlight covers).

That being said... that technique will only work if the scratch is somewhere in the middle of the hood.. If the scratch is near another panel, you might have to blend onto that panel and re-clear it as well as the hood.

Color matching _is_ an art. Science will only get you so close.

Good advice by tech. I had a large chip on the hood of my '00 and the body shop used the sanding, prime and blend method.

spot repair, blend and clear the whole hood...

make sure to go with a good body shop that can show you examples of their work. A good paint man is indeed an artist and can match it so you wouldn't be able to find it without a VERY good eye... Someone who knows what they're doing can even match the orange peel in the clear on your factory paint.
