What do you think CAGS does? It forces you to shift from first to fourth under certain circumstances. You said shifting to third eliminates that.
CAGS does not give you the option to shift to third instead of fourth. Both second and third are locked out when CAGS engages. If you are able to shift from first to third CAGS has not engaged and you could have just as easily shifted into second.
So, simply put, shifting to third does not eliminate the force to fourth, you did that by bringing the RPMs to a level that causes CAGS to not engage.
Just to clarify, so I can shift from 1st to 3rd if I have CAGS but speed up to rpm's that disengage CAGS?
Because of the annoying shift skip from 1st to 4th, one day i decided to shift from 1st to 3rd. 2nd gear always seemed to low for me unless I was stepping on it, and 4th of course is way to high a gear from 1st. I noticed with a half pull down from 1st it springs loads to the right for a nice smooth shift to 3rd. The gear transition seems to be much smoother and still has plenty of torque. It's much less jerky than going into 2nd.
Bottom line: 1st to 3rd = smoother transition at normal RMP with less gas... and oh btw, eliminates any issues with the annoying skip shift to 4th if you haven't installed the skip shift eliminator yet...
Bra, drive it like you stoled it and didnt needed the shift skip!
Is that really needed lol? How long is your first gear about .75 seconds?
However this thread really is confusing. If you can shift lazily into 2nd or 3rd, then the CAGS is disabled. The whole point of it is to physically force you to shift to 4th. If your beating it then you are doing so by going past its rpm limit.

Actually that's incorrect. CAGS only locks out 2nd. All other gears can be engaged while CAGS is active. I've had no problems shifting to 3rd every time the shift to 4th light has come on and its not because i've increased the RPM to disengage it. Here is an excerpt i found on the internet that backs up this up.
------------------------------------------
CAGS (or Computer Aided Gear Selection) is a EPA fix to force a driver to get better gas mileage. CAGS will activate under the following conditions:
· the engine coolant temperature is higher than 169蚌,
· vehicles speeds are 15-19 mph and
· The throttle percentage is 21 or less
When the above conditions are met, the computer will tell a solenoid mounted behind the shifter to activate and extend. When this solenoid is activated and extended, the shifter will not be able to go into second gear. This will force the driver to shift into 4th gear (but the driver can actually shift into any other gear as well).
The light on the dash is my only reminder that CAGS even exists-the skip-shift eliminator was the second thing I added to my Vette when I got it 2 years ago.
Column Lock Bypass was the first.
I use all 6,never even thought about skipping gears till I saw this thread, then I wondered "why the hell would you do that?"
I guess some people have their reasons, but I don't have one.

I eliminated CAGS when I had 3.42s.
Going to 4.10s brought the 1-3-5 or 1-2-4 shifts into play for around town driving. Only with the 4.10s, not the 3.42s.
1st about .75?....feels like it but then thats another thread....
Can you take your car to a shop and have the CAGS turned off or do you have to purchase a hand held devise to cut the system off. I hate this feature as my 71 has a 4 speed and i go through all the gears when i drive it just to much old school in me to skip gears.

it can be done through a tune or you can get an eliminator plug on fleabay for less than $20 to your door. plugs in in 5 minutes
