I leave my battery in the car and hook up a Battery Tender Plus to it. Never had a problem doing that.

I've been disconnecting my battery for at least 4 years with no problems for 5 months. The only programing necessary is the key fob and resetting the radio security lock. If you are to believe anything else it is total B as in B, S as in S.

Mine is a 2001, don't know how the 1998's are. I don't have TPS but my bro's FRC did and when the battery was disconnected when we doing some drive train over hauling, they too needed to be reprogrammed as well as the key fobs and the PCM readiness.

Here in PA, they plug in your car to see if your emmision controls are functioning correctly. Not sure what they do in your state.
I've been storing my 2003 inside the garage with a float charger on it till the next April for years. But since I don't drive more than 4500 miles a year, I am not subject to an emissions test. They put a sticker on the windshield stating "Emissions Exempt" so my car hasn't had a emissions test here in SE PA in the last six years. And you can leave the battery in or take it out (Which I really don't understand why) but you can can't go bad like a jar of jam, there's no "Use By" dated stamped on these cars. Leaving it in the car disconnected won't harm a thing.

Never said it would harm anything. I just said you will loose your settings.

If you weren't emmissions exempt and you just plugged your battery back in and went over to get tested you would fail.

That was the point of my comments.

It's a hassle to have to reset everything and why go through all of that when you can just hook it up to a battery tender.

Hi

Yes mine is always stored in garage since I drive it a few times a year since my car is home and I work overseas.

However normall I only disconnected the - plug...but I learned not to do this since 2 month ago when I took her for spin the Gel-Batterry just fried!

So now (after installing a new gel battery) I just disconnect both + and -.

No issues so far.

Mike

Well I never have had a emissions test done on my 2003 since I bought it new, one day perhaps. But if you take the battery out or just disconnect it, why would the PCM setting change ? What would cause them to change? Personally I never disconnect or take the battery out of the car for the winter and I don't understand why anyone would, but hay it a free to do what turns you on society. I have never had a problem in April restarting my car after four month of being on the float charger, I use a battery-Minder #12118 from VDC Electronics, Cheap $39.99 and has a function that after full voltage is gained, the unit starts to De-sulphate the lead plate or spiral wound lead in a Optima or Odyssey battery. But I digress, I keep the trickle charger on it and don't go over 4K miles a year and it has never failed an state inspection.

Have to agree with ajg1915. I had a '01 T/A and disconnected the battery to install a new headlight cover motor. Unfortunatly I went to get a sticker a couple days later and it failed because several sensors were not ready, in MA you can't have more than two not ready, and you only have 60 days to retest. I drove it 500+ miles and they were still not "ready" and I was nearing the end of the 60 day period. Had to have it re-flashed to pass.
What a pain in the a**, I'll never disconnect one again unless I have no other choice.

I'm in PA too and my badges get renewed in October before I store the car. So if I pull the battery or it dies over the winter, emissions is a mute point when I pull it out in the spring.

Thanks, It seems like nobody here believes anything you say when you're trying to help them out.

Mine is due in April so it does not work for me.

Your car has memory features for several items, it's just like disconnecting the power from your home appliances, you have to re-set them to remember your programming.

I remove the battery every year in my 03 Z06 and never had to reprogram anything.
