Yes. Just make sure the radio LOC (anti theft) is off. Then disconnect and store the battery in a warm place like the basement on a wooden board. Come spring put it back in and you are ready to go.

My car is setting in a storage unit as I type with no battery in it. The battery is resting in my cozy garage.

Hope my anti theft was off, first storage experience for me and that didn't cross my mind. Is the Radio Loc code somewhere in the owners manual package?

By removing your battery you'll have all kinds of issues when you start it up.

First off you'll fail any emmision test until the PCM resets itself or gets reflashed, unless you run through a battery of steps. Probably have to do the re-idle learn and all of your settings in the car wiil be gone, including key fobs and probably tire pressure sensors.

Best to use a battery tender.

No emission tests here so that is not a problem. As far as any other problems I will let you know March/April time frame....although I was emailed some storage info from a reputable forum member and there were quotes on this document from GM reps that stated no issues from removing batteries for storage. That being said I agree that tenders are definitely a better option if your storage site has power!

I was able to contact my buddy who is a GM electronics specialist, one of the best in Toronto Canada. He states its not a problem as many vettes have batteries go dead during storage and they are fine.

I've stored my car for 10 years from the end of October until the beginning of April. All I've ever done is disconnect the negative terminal. It has always fired up the first try every spring. (I suppose I've just jinxed myself.)

It's not the end of the world, it just makes life simpler to leave the battery in and on a charger.

I have enough hassles in life and in no need to create anymore.

Default My 2 cents

A gen-u-wine Battery Tender cannot be beat. Before I got mine, the car sat for about 3 months and the battery ran down: that was the beginning of my Service Steering Column message that I STILL have to clear from the DIC EVERY TIME I START THE CAR! (Curses.) I'm sure it was a matter of time, since ultimately it's just a bug with the car; but since I'm still on the orignal battery, I could have avoided it for quite a few more years.

Sorry, but I disagree on this one, unless the '98s are different from newer C5s. I remove the battery form the car and keep it in inside. The only resetting needed is to reset the fobs (not even a relearn), which takes 7 seconds. No other settings are lost on my '98.

I guarantee you that you would not pass inspection, if they hook up your car and check the readiness of everything.

If you have memory options, they are lost too.

Mine is a 2001, don't know how the 1998's are. I don't have TPS but my bro's FRC did and when the battery was disconnected when we doing some drive train over hauling, they too needed to be reprogrammed as well as the key fobs and the PCM readiness.

Here in PA, they plug in your car to see if your emmision controls are functioning correctly. Not sure what they do in your state.

Buy a tender. Pep boys has a nice small tender the DELTRAN BATTERY TENDER JR sold by many of the parts vendors like ecklers & mid-america. Normal price is $39. sale price is $29. I use it in my vette and my other classic car.

I use a float charger and leave it plugged in but that is my opinion!
