This wednesday night the Speed Channel will have a show on called Test Drive. The will preview the 2011 corvette and one of the test drivers is 5 time NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson. It will be this Wednesday night at 10 pm eastern time.
His five series championships leave him within two of the record of seven held by Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. Petty's son, Kyle, a broadcaster who hosted Tuesday's live-to-tape show "No Restrictor Plate," which will air next week on SPEED TV, already elevates Johnson's significance to the level of those NASCAR Hall of Famers.
"He means just as much to the sport as Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt did," Kyle Petty said. "You have to look at Jimmie's complete body of work. It's what you do in the boardroom now, too. It's what you do away from the racetrack as much as you do on the racetrack. And I'm not sure Petty or Earnhardt could have done that away (from the track) during this period of time."
Watched the show and loved the ZR1 and C6R! Jimmy had to have a serious pucker factor when he spun out the C6R; then again I guess he is used to spinning out in NASCAR.
SOB, AHH! I just saw this thread. I missed it. Spent yesterday studying for a test. How was the show? Any goods or bads on the new Vette and what model did they drive?
FYI, if you have Directv, just set your DVR to record anything with Corvette in the title or description. I get all kinds of shows recorded that for one reason or another talk about Corvettes. Good show on the Z06 plant, the one from last night etc etc. Course you also get the occassional Cheers episode or other random sitcom, but its worth it.
BWAAhahhahaha........waste of time with Jimmy Johnson test driving. What does he know about driving a real race car?
Let me preface my comments by saying I can't stand NASCAR.
The problem with NASCAR is NOT the cars and it's definitely not the drivers, most of whom are very capable I'm sure. It's the ridiculous culture that has sprung up around it. I personally don't like watching because it's boring, at least on TV. I also don't like the fact that it's become so synonymous with American culture in the eyes of the world...but that's another discussion.
My point is that it's foolish to sterotype Jimmie Johnson as being an incompetent driver because he's paid a sh*tload of money to turn left a lot. Perhaps you could do better?
For relevance, the show was somewhat interesting even if it was a half hour commercial for Chevy. I will be more impressed if they do more episodes featuring other cars as well...911, Astons, Italians, etc.
Speaking of other cars......
Saw a test of some Alpha Romeo roadster. They showed the specs which I think my 10 year old C5 could beat, all for the low price of $300,000.+. The ZR1 would blow it in the weeds at a third of the price and be better looking to boot.
