I just installed GM Performance drilled and slotted rotors with GM standard pads. I now have narrow rust rings on the rotors between the outside footprint of the pads and and the painted portion of the hats. I didn't have this with the stock rotors. Any suggestions why this is happening?

good luck with that. they are a POS
had my "new" ones for 4 months before i trashed them and got ATE. in that 4 months the rear ones had fused to the parking brake assembly from all of the rust
these are my ATE's. i like them
I get it that iron rusts. What I don't get is that the hats are painted but the pads are 1/2" away from the hats, leaving a ring of rust between them. My original factory rotors did not have this problem. It's almost as if the pads are set too far away from the edge of the hats on the rotors.
I have the same rotors, GMPP drilled/slotted, I like the way they look when they're clean, and I like the way they work, but they look like a POS when they get wet.... I ended up taking them off and painting where I could, and on the fronts I even sprayed inside the vents, also painted the edges on the rears.... no issues now, no brake dust at all with the pads I'm using, but next time around I'll buy something else - won't buy these rotors again...

Your pictures show your pads right next to the painted hats, which it would seem to keep rust off the unpainted portion. My pads are between 1/4" to 1/2" away from the painted hats, leaving a rust "ring."
I was wondering what pads you were using and perhaps that's why the pads seem to be covering more of the rotor surface.
I'm using GMPP slotted/drilled pads/rotors, and GMPP ceramic pads.... I over painted the rotors past the area where the pads wipe, and 1st brake application cleaned them up nicely to the painted area... they still hold up good,

Installing the same rotors in the morning with Hawk HPS pads,,,Overspraying rotors with two coats 1/2 hour apart with 400 High Heat Rustoleum,,,hoping for good results,,,last time the rust stayed away for three years!
I have the same problem, but I noticed the rust band is getting narrower the more I drive the car, and in fact is almost gone on the front rotors. I wonder if it is because the pads are slowly getting broken in. I only have about a thousand road miles since I installed the new rotors and pads. I don't use the brakes as much as city drivers since I live in the country and do most of my driving there.
