Default headers

Just wondering if anyone can explain to me the differences in long tubee and shorty headers?

Thanks everyone!

The names should pretty much tell the story.

A shorty header will have short (though usually larger diameter) primary tubes and will often appear similar to the exhaust manifold it replaces. Shortys are often designed to leave the cat-convertor in factory location and are often smog-legal. They will often give a good increase in HP on the top-end, but sometimes with minimal torque gains.

Long-tubes have long primaries that can often be equal-length or tuned to promote exhaust-scavenging. Because of this, they will deliver more performance than the shortys...especially in torque.

Many of the shorty headers (from B&B in AZ for example) are smog legal in 50 states which makes them attractive in more ways than one.

They can usually be installed by an owner easily in a DIY weekend. And they don't require modification to the rest of the exhaust system as do long tubes. They improve the looks of the engine compartment which is all anyone sees anyway. They remove substantial weight from the front of the car (over oem cast iron) where it really matters. Depending on the rest of the exhaust system, they may improve the sound of the system. Horsepower isn't what long tubes may yield, but you should expect 10-12hp and w/o the need for a tune as long tubes generally require.

B&B, JBA, BBK, BORLA, EDLEBROCK, BASSANI, CALLAWAY, DOUG'S are sources for shorty headers. Some are smog legal, some are not so do your research if they're in your future.

Just to be perfectly clear, a CARB-approved aftermarket header does NOT exist for the 02-04 Z06. Several options exist for the remaining C5 models though.

Default Billy Boat Shorty is CARB Legal

For C5's the Billy Boat shorty is a 4-2-1 style header. It is of course 50 state legal and makes an honest 20 HP and is half the weight of the factory manifold.

PLease let ke know if I can help further.

Default You're not telling the whole story.

This is the second time I've seen you claim CARB exemption on the C5 Z06 forum while failing to mention that this CARB EO does not apply to all Z06 models.

The full CARB EO details are here: http://arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/de...eo/D-506-2.pdf

The EPA engine code for my vehicle, a 2004 Z06, is 4GMXV05.7082. This engine code is specifically cited as not being valid under the EO. The original poster presumably drives a 2002 Z06; if his engine code is 2GMXV05.7082 (this is printed on the sticker at the driver's side of your engine compartment) then it is also invalid for him.

So what? If the thing's approved, who's going to check engine codes for individual models. The whole difference is bureucratic nonsense.

It's the principal of it. Regardless of intent, he's being misleading. Is B&B willing to take responsibility in the event that a smog inspector is sharp enough to do his job correctly? Unlikely.

But you're right, the whole difference really is bureaucratic nonsense.

I run ceramic coated B&B shorties because I'm in So Cal, and I haven't run into any smog issues...yet anyways.

And at least the second time he hasn't responded to that question. I asked the same of his response in another post hoping BB had pursued an EO# for Z's. He did not answer the question then either.

You don't understand what it's like to live here in CA. If you happen to get stopped in a roadside smog check and they wanted to be difficult, they could impound your vehicle.

People who don't live here just don't seem to understand how serious smog testing and smog-legal equipment is. They can, do and will check aftermarket parts to confirm legality. Even the fine itself without the car being impounded is stiff - especially now with the state hemoraging money like a strainer and the police agencies turning into "revenue generators".

there is a simple answer to the smog crap...contact your congressman, support SEMA and groups like it or live with it and for you that live in calif, I feel sorry for you but you deserve what you get for living in a socialist style, liberal out of touch state if you chose to stay there. Yes I think california sucks and stand by my opinion and for your info I have lived there twice (not by choice) and wouldn't go back for any amount of money, love, prosperity etc. my opinion only But good luck to those that have to live there and we can be thankful for the many good things in the past that came from the sunshine state.

And this is why I choose not to live there. But I agree with you, you need to make sure that you follow the law carefully in CA.

I live 1/2 mile from the beach, it is absolutely beautiful and the weather is awesome but we are importing poverty and becoming a third world country - soon it will be just the liberal elite and poverty - NO middle class !
