my 03 z06 was 15k with 65k miles and full bolt ons...
that was all i could spend really. maybe more for the right car.
if my budget was 25k, i would have looked at mn6 c6 cars, at 30k i might have gone with the ls3 c6 if i found one. i wouldnt have gotten a ls2 c6 though. same power as my ls6 with more weight. no thx... ls3 would have been adiff story tho.
and if i had 45 50 k to spend (whatever c6z goes for) i might have gotten a c6 z06...
when 7th gen comes out and some time passes for people to upgrade to them, ill probaly sell my z06 and get a c6 z06. that probably means like 3 years.
so the q u wanna ask urself is
how much can i spend?
do i want the lighter corvette with similar power numbers?
is the price diff justified?
This is a must - it will help you to decide - the other factor will be money
Thanks,Matt
Thanks for the advice guys. By reading what everyone said it seem like you guys are happy with your c5 as well as me. Just trying to find the difference. looking forward into test driving the different generation later in Spring.

Those are the question i'm asking myself and many others. I'm doing research little by little to make my decision.
To me it's also a function of how much you want to invest.
If your budget is $13-$20k, then IMO a well maintained C5 is hands down the best bang-for-buck performance platform on the planet.
If you are looking to spend $25-$40k, then by all means, treat yourself to the more refined C6.
If money wasn't a factor, we'd all have a ZR1, right?
(But given the tuition bills I'll be paying for three kids well into any foreseeable future, my paid off C5 is my little slice of heaven!)
This sums it up, comes down to money.
Also the C5 is easier to deal with the check engine light, apparently. Also the 2001 to 2004 C5s are quite standard while the 05, 06 07 C6's have some custom parts.
Given the choice without factoring in money, id take a 05 over an 04.
Given I live in the real world and am a bargain hunter, I bought an 04
Im an outside perspective so maybe I can help. Depends on 2 things. Your test drive and what you want out of the car. Everyone seems to go from a late c4 to a c5 Z06 because everyone says they have the same feel. You feel every little bump, feel the road, and just feel like your driving something more simplistic yet powerfull. Interior feel, looks and engine feel are all different from c5 to c6. I will say this though that will probably offend most on here. Currently Im looking for something fun with a back seat, and pretty much am set on a GTO. There is no way in heck Id get an ls1 GTO and mod it up to 400hp 400lb ft area to match the LS2 GTO. Having those extra cubes and 500 more rpms adds up. Ive been comparing dyno sheets of ls2/ls6/modded ls1's and the extra power is EVERYWHERE on the larger motors. Now with vettes its a little different regarding transmissions. In the GTO ls1 and ls2's have the quicker m12 out of the z06 but with vettes the trans choices vary(c5 has regular m6, c5z06 has the m12, and c6 has regular m6 or m12 depending on if its a z51 or not). Obviously due to weight the z06 is faster, but as far as modding while using stock internals I'd take the same rpm range while having more low and mid range. Now the ls3, it has the super torque of being a large motor but just as much if not more top end then the ls6. Keep in mind most of that was from an engine perspective, if you dont love riding in the car then the car is not for you. I would MUCH rather have a WS6 trans am based on looks, lightness and some other factors vs the GTO, but less then 5 minutes in the trans am blew away everything I thought about it two weeks ago. Dont care how good lookin it is, Id never own one.

Spend, not an investment at all. Unless you want to call it an investment in adrenaline, but its still spending. If one thinks of it as an investment, one won't enjoy it and drive it as much as one should.

paragraphs are your friend, learn to use them.
no one looks twice at a trans am or a newer gto.
everyone looks at corvettes and especially C5 Z06s.

WS6's look way more aggressive then vette's. GTO's are much more rare then c5's by a long shot, either way its meant for a different market. I love most all vette's, but seeing a c5 or c6 isn't a big deal anymore they are everywhere. And let's be real here, the only people that can point out a z are vette people for the most part. It's got a shorter hatch, a badge up front, and 10 cent plastic brake scoops on the side... thank god Chevy fixed that on the new z's. Would I own one though? Yup.
My take on this for what its worth goes like this.
I had a 98 coupe with some nice mods and I loved that car and had it for 6 years. I sold it this summer because I wanted a C6Z06 so thats what I did.
This is what I told everybody that ask if it was worth it. For me it was because of several reasons.
1. My C5 was an auto but I had 3:73 rear gears and a high stall converter with a few other things. But I always wanted a stick.
2. Forget hp the C6Z06 has a 427cu in. engine in it. For guys over 50 those numbers are magic they go back to the old muscle car era.
3. Newer car newer tech simple as that
I will try to sum it up like this and this is just my opinion so take it easy on me.
The C5 is a much better looking car for sure and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
Now for the C6 do you really think Gm would make a newer gen car and go backwards on handling and performance? I am in no way saying the C6 is better in anyway just different
I own a C6 (08) and recently bought a C5 (04) second vette. Both are great cars. The C6 is more refined, more quiet and faster, LS1 vs LS3. C5's are the best bang for the buck. I was going to buy the wife a new Camaro and found a 04 convertible with 13,500 miles. Cheaper taxes, insurance, about the same trunk, both are 2 person cars, better gas mileage and best of all, it's a Vette!
