Has anyone else changed their manual tranny fluid along with the rear axle fluid?? I just did mine and the gear noise I used to hear is abscent now. The manual says no oil change required for manual gear boxes which is what I have a M6, the car is at 47Plus k mile heading towards 48, so I just had themboth changed?? was wondering if anyone else experienced the abscence of the gear warble thing. i have read on here it is normal, and now maybe I am thinking it is not. My car also dropped is MPG on the highway way down. I will let you know if it makes a significant difference I am going on a short drive mostly hwy, wednesday down to PC florida to drop my pops off at the airport. will see what happens.

Also side note, I had the anti theft mode come on again for bad pass code, I wound up sitting there trying to clear the codes several times, and wound up taking my leatherman file to the diode and it wound up working again will post again. I cleaned them both ( Keys ) that is with an eraser and then it locked up on me at the gas pump?? talk about embarressing. But I got it running again and will let the group know, nothing heavy with the file just a like going over with the fin teeth part there are two different types of teeth one course, and one fine. If anyone has this problem and has a file or pencil eraser then go over both sides of your diode on your key and reset your codes it should allow you to get the car running.

Good stuff... about the key.

Tranny fluid I have been told by tranny tech should be changed more often than normal.
It causes lots of problems. Noise and heavy shifts... Just make sure you put in the right stuff.

Your right about the owners manual stating our cars do not need manual tranny fluid change.

But, if you do... Manual = DEXRON-lll Automatic Transmission Fluid for replacement.

Note: If you are having trouble shifting it can sometimes be burnt fluid in clutch cylinder or low level in reservoir.

I just changed my 6 speed transmission fluid, and rear Diff oil too.

Wrote a procedure. It was easier than I thought.... but messier than I thought too....

Go to my web page....

scroll down to the bottom and click on :
C5 Rear Differential Fluid change:
and
C5 6 Speed Manual Fluid change:

I only have 19K miles on my car and I felt things loosen up a little. I never had any gear noise that I heard before. I may not have heard it with how loud my car is though.

The black thing on the key is NOT a diode-it's a simple precision resistor.

WOW !!!! Great "how to" write up. This is in my future to try and help with shifting. Now it looks like something I can handle.

I was hesitant at first, but once I read how to do it, and actually did it .... its easy ! Save some $$ doing it yourself too !

I found that to be true when I changed the fluid in my Bird to synthetic.
I expect and hope that is the case with my Vette.
Noise can also be from shift **** not installed properly. At high revs, mine vibrated and I thought it was gear whine. Took off shift **** to see about aftermarket **** and shifter. Reinstalled just the **** one more turn till it bottomed on threads, reinstalled key and center punched it.... No more gear whine / noise (lol) So, I took the next step and installed B&M Short Shifter. What a difference....Now very close and tight. So, I figure a little syn and it will shift as good as my Bird with the same set up. However, I can tell that the Vette's Short Shifter is a little shorter throw than the Bird's... NICE !!!

Excellent write-up.

I love the following statement:

"IMPORTANT GM recomendations after the rear differential fluid has been changed. GM recommends NOT to drive your car at Wide Open Throttle for 300 miles"

Don't know that I know a stretch of road in the US that I could drive WOT for 300 miles if I wanted too

Default Manual transmission and differential fluid change ?

I'd use either Royal Purple ATF and their differential fluid with a bottle of GM anti-slip fluid/ additive or Amsoil own brand. There both excellant made products. I had the fluid changed in my DD with Dextron III and it works excellant. I don't know if it was Dextron III or the synthetic, the shop said it was synthetic. Had I been able to do it myself, I'd of used Amsoil or Royal Purple. Cost alot, but still Great companies.
