You'll just pull them back on the wire out of the way and put your wire remover pliers or channel locks pliers or strong hands and rotate while pulling. (Don't be surprised during wire removal. I was!)
Then before you install the new wires, insert the shield and install. Don't forget the grease.

You'll probably answer some of your questions when you're in there working on it to see the effectivity of the heat shields. Unless you have headers, then it might be slightly different. Just go out and take a peek, it's really a lot more straight forward then you think. It's normal, I've done my LT1 several times and that required straddling the passenger front tire to get to #8. And each wire was different so you had to map them all out first.
The LS1, geez each wire is the same and what a few inches long. Leading up to it, I thought man this is going to be another ordeal like the LT1, not a chance. It is very straightforward.
Your only concern on aluminum engines is to work on a cold engine, use aluminum anti-seize and use proper torque. Personally I like to hand start my plugs, I just prefer to feel the threads start. Then I switch over to the socket and finger tight then put the torque wrench on and torque it.
The GMPP red wires are optimum quality to do the job. And compare head to head against the others. The forum dealer Gene Culley will treat you right for price too.
