Try SYNCING the FOB. Press LOCK & UNLOCK both at the same time and hold them until the horn toots. (may take a min or so to sync) Then see if it will unlock with the FOB.
Didn't know that I own a '99. Learn something everyday.
And the door handle is the same used on many GM models. Makes you feel real good about that near 50K Corvette sitting at a traffic light and that Bonneville next to you has the same door handles!
i ended up opening the door with a wire hanger it took a lot of time that was my solution (no i didn't damage the window or the seal thank god i washed it right after)

That doesn't surprise me none its been that way with GM sharing parts with all their brands for as long as I can remember and I have been around GM vehicles for a very long time since the 1960's. Trust me they shared way before that time period also.

Currently having this same problem and can't get into my car. Neither key or FOB works even though the keys both physically turn in both directions. It still does not unlock the door. Not sure I have any other options besides calling a locksmith?
