Boots will be fine as long as there are no holes/tears.
However both ends of the half shafts need to be free of rust/grime.
Use cleaner then wirebrush, sandpaper & then apply greese in the splines.
Now your ready to reinstall.
Did you get your trans issue dealt with mickey? New one or rebuilt the old one?
rebuilt the old one. currently trying to put it back in, just taking a small break

i tried the wire brush and sandpaper but no cleaner. wasnt sure what to use and i didnt want to make it worse. what grease do i apply? thin layer im assuming? wouldnt it stay lubricated with the Diff oil once installed?
Shaft going into the differential would only need to be rust free, &
use a light oil/WD 40 etc.
You want it to slide in easily into the differential.
Also, make sure the clips are still on both shafts coming out of the diff.
The axle shafts, definately have to be lightly lubed & free of rust.
I have heard that high quality motor cyle chain lube works real well on the axle ends of the 1/2 shafts & also spray unto the recieving end of the hubs. There have been many posts in regards to hearing a popping sound coming from the rear axle/hub from not being lubed & being rusty inside.
