Default Which gears should I get?

Right now I have a Vararam and Borla Stingers with X-pipe. I plan on getting headers next year but this year I want to go with gears first. I'm assuming 4.10's will still hook up with what I have but just wondering what you all think. I do not care about top speed or gas mileage, just pure fun and acceleration.

Thanks

What do you have M6 or A4? If you have an M6 4.10's would be a lot of fun, make sure you got some good stickies on the ground!

A4. I figured 4.10's would be best but just checking before I do it.

4.10's are too much gear for an A4 - IMHO.

Are you running 2.73's or 3.15's now? A lot of people find a take-out 3.42 rear from the M6/M12 cars.

Just my $.02

I agrree. And 4:10 gears are too much gear for your A4.
Being your gonna be pulling the rear to change gears, you might as
well upgrade your torque converter @ the same time.

I was assuming that you had a 6sp. 4.10 would be way to much, look for a 3.42 and get yourself a Yank converter. A converter will give you that fun quickness you are looking for. Best bang for the buck, ask anyone here on the forum what gear stall combo they have. 8 out of 10 will tell you 3.42 and yank SS3200, and a few with SS3600. Do your homework. on converters and I think you will find what you are looking for.

I have 3.42's and a Yank ss3200, I'm 1 of the 10, again this is just my opinion! Good luck!

You need to look here: You are going to HATE 4.10's in an A4 here is a chart that will show the RPM Diff at different MPH -

http://mysite.verizon.net/foofoo2/c6/

Your best gear is gonna be 3.42's and they are easy to come by combine that with a 2800 - 3200 stall -

Thanks,Matt

A good choice would be the 3.42's. You will notice a nice difference.

I have a 99 conv. and had 3.73 gears installed. The performance difference is immense. But, I still have too much top end speed. I can't use it. I wish I would have went with 3.90 or 4.11's to give me more power down low. So... if you change gears don't make my same mistake.

I couldn't have said it better. I love my A4, 3:42's and the Yank 2800 stall. I could smoke them at will. Now, with heads and a cam it's just stupid fast.

So 3.42's or 3.73's? It seems the 3.42's will be easier and cheaper to come by. What are the risks in buying used gears? Since I have a 3.15 can't I just buy ring and pinion or would it be better just to swap out the whole unit?

I have a 3,42 ring and pinion out of a Z06 with about 40k. And I live about an hour from you, $100 and I don't have to ship. I am only selling because a bought my buddies 3.42 diff for really cheap!

How much and how reliable would it be for a shop to do ring and pinion swap?

Blitzkrieg, why do you have 3.42's available, didn't you use the ring and pinion for your car?
