Need advice about C5 2003 insulation
There are a few options here:
Damping mat (Dynamat material) This is designed to reduce vibration and has a small impact on structure borne noise. It does very little to block radiated sound, save for simply being mass in the way of the sound wave. The suggested use is to cover the center 50% of any panel.
Foam absorber (Such as Raamat Ensolite) This is designed to cushion between panels, reduce rattle, (has some effect on heat, too) diminishes higher frequency noise fairly well and can be used to cover gaps.
Some people use Frost King. It's not as effective as Ensolite and priced similarly.
Sound Barrier (Such as Secondskin Luxury Liner) This is massive (1lb/square foot) vinyl with a foam backing. IT's thick, it's heavy, it's expensive. It's a sound barried and does a fantastic job of blocking mid-high frequency sounds and a decent job at lower frequencies (the only material that can, really.) GM uses a similar but thinner material in strategic locations in the C5.
If you wanted to do straight foam, for good sound absorbing, it would need to be uncompressed and 9" thick throughout. I'm sure you can see the problem here!
My suggestion?
Raamat 50% center panels,
ensolite cover the entire interior.
Leave carpet padding in place.
This is the best bang for your buck and what I would do if I had to start from scratch. I say that, having the most deadened car on the forum.
