decided to change the 11 year old plugs today. Not too bad, #7 was a real PITA with trying to get around the AIR and all but doable.
But dang it I lost one of the old plugs. It dropped into the engine bay somewhere and I cant find it. With my luck it is going to rattle into a belt and launch through the hood. I dont think I am going to reuse the metal heat shields. Is that a mistake?
I just cant find it. Ive been under the car, flashlights, rocking everything. I may just have to hope it drops out cause there must be one hole in the frame somewhere that it fell into.
That is the messed up part. I dropped a few of them trying to work around the pipes etc with the thinking I would pick them up once I was finished. I recovered 7. Looking back I should have picked up each plug immediately after i dropped it.
Dont worry about it, there is a lot of stuff that I've dropped and never found. No harm. The last few turns I do by hand and use an exam glove to grip though.
I recently had to replace the 7.4 liter Mercruiser stern drive engine in my boat. The original had been in the boat for over 10 years. When I removed the old engine it was very obvious that over those years lots of stuff been dropped during repairs and had landed or rolled under the engine. I recovered 2 spark plugs, an assortment of hose clamps, wire connectors a few sockets and even a screw driver.
Get a flex magnet on a extendable shaft. Magnet is extremely strong and fish around, it will pick up the plug. Heck you can use it on lots of future projects too! (like a pic pocket at the fair, LOL) Rob

Chances are it will either just fall out on its own or will continue to ride along with you lodged up against some other part of the car. Seriously doubt it would ever get launched up through the hood.

I have this exact item. It has paid for itself many times over.
You can find things you never knew were there.
Bought it at a auto parts store years ago.
El original is sure right about the magnet, I use mine alot and have used it to find stuff around the engine bay when dropped. Once with string tied to it, lowered it into the lake and found keys that we dropped off the pier. Harbor Freight has good selection.
Or rocket through someone’s windshield at 60MPH someday.
I lost a battery bolt in my 2002 one day. It showed up rather violently one day while I was driving down the road at 45mph. luckily I was all alone on the road. Sounded like bullets hitting the bottom of the car.
