Default 01z vs 02-04z

Just wondering. How much quicker is the 02-04z's compared to the 01 stock for stock? If you raced them with equal drivers. How much faster would the 02-04's be? Also what's the comparison on the dyno?

I've driven hundreds of C5s, and in my experience, I've driven stock '01s that seem faster on spinning the tachometer up to redline through the gears than '02+ cars. You really can't tell the difference between the years... it really comes down to the car itself.

I personally have an '01z. I picked the cleanest one I could find and that was it.

Who cares about a stinkin' 20hp? Add a cam, and headers and you've turned an '01 into any year z you've done the same mods to.

Also, do a search, this topic only comes up once per month for the last few years. Plenty to read I'm sure.

Get the cleanest one for the money.

I bought an 01Z and put in a 408 and coilovers. Aside from the back window, I should have bought a coupe!

There easily could have been differences in the vehicles you drove, but stock for stock this is what GM states:

2001 (385 horsepower)………...12.6 114
2002-2004 (405 horsepower)…12.4 116

Looking at the fast list and Ranger's times (who has made hundreds of passes with both vehicles) the 02+ vehicles are faster. His 2002 went about 3.5mph faster and 4 tenths quicker with similar mods. For someone who has recorded information about a LOT of passes with both cars, this is a very good indication that the 02+ cars are faster.

If your seeing that variation in lap times in the 1/4 mile, I'd have to imagine that both cars on the same roadcourse would have a pretty noticeable variation as well. These are the comparisons you'd love to see done officially and with professional drivers.

In my book owning a Z06 period is pretty awesome, but I have to admit I went after the 02+ car a little more. I think it was honestly because I liked the standard equipped HUD though more than anything. I really wanted that for some reason. If anything, the 2001 ain't bustin valvesprings like the 02+...reliability sure sounds good...haha.

Different cam specs.....different springs. 01Z's have blue springs and the 02+ had the yellows which were prone to break w/o warning. 02-04Z's had a slightly more aggressive cam. I believe they are as so....
'01 LS6 .525/.525 lift, 211/204 duration, 116 LSA
'02-04 LS6 .551/.555 lift, 218/204 duration, 117.5 LSA

Same here.
Just another option to have.
The only thing I think I would have liked even more would have been a SW '02, which unfortunately wasn't available.

My friend with an 01z (all stock) just took my 03z (mostly stock) for a little ride around the area and said that just pulling out of the parking spot was a huge difference. He couldn't believe the difference between the two cars. A few quotes were "Oh man, I thought MY car was fast", "Geez, now I'm going to have to spend some money", and "I can't believe how much torquier it feels."

He asked me if I wanted to drive his... I really didn't want to since I pretty much knew what to expect. But there's definitely a difference you can feel right away.

If you plan on keep it stock, the 02-04 are slightly faster...

but

If you plan to do some mods like a cam and supporting mod(intake/headers) the 01 will get to the same level

Busting valve springs? been reading too much intent rants?

Seen many many Zs Being raced. Only busted valve springs were on custom build engines with high lift cams.

I find it hard to believe anyone would actually feel the difference. There is 20 hp, but feeling it just by driving it is not very likely. You are not going to feel 1 tenths difference in quarter mile. Buy what you like and can afford. They are all very awesome cars and the more I read, much more streetable for the average person than the C6Z.

Believe me, you can tell the difference of 25 Lbs of torque. You can also tell the difference in the 01 LS6 clutch and the 02+ LS6 clutch. He nailed it a few times in 1st and 2nd. He ran through the gears a couple times. He could easily feel the difference.

OK. Don't plan on arguing the point. Maybe you are the rare one that can. By the way, only 15 extra torque. If the clutch doesn't slip, it will make no difference. Still say it would be a very rare person that can actually feel a 1 tenth difference in any two cars. Just my opinion.
