I know. I try to plan my travels to FL in the overnight straight through it usually shaves an hour or more off the time. I will check into my last trip and see if I can provide any real advice.
We have a saying here in Florida, and it is "when leaving Florida, you must go through Atlanta and that includes going to heaven".
I would guess the best bet is to take the I 285 loop. If you try any of the older back roads, you will most like add a lot of time to your trip, probably more than just taking the loop.
Now if time is not that important, than jump on the old back roads. The scenery will be mush better than the interstate.

Yea, I've tried both 75 and 285 and honestly there isn't much difference. 285 is much longer and almost as slow.
Play around with mapquest a little. Think about taking 65 to Montgomery and smaller highways back to 75 around Macon or down to US19. US19 (in upper FLA) is a really nice drive with little traffic.

I just went through there on the way down. best plan is to stay overnight in Calhoun, GA then in the morning you will hit Atlanta around 9:30---10:00 AM and you can fly through downtown in the diamond lane...works every time...wish we had diamond lanes in Michigan!!! Returning home is a different story....have to grin and bear it, but if you plan the return trip for a Sunday it is a breeze as well....forget going all the way around on 285...way too long and too many trucks...you'll be exhausted from the experience...
If you are headed to the panhandle from IL I would take I-65 into AL and pick up 431 to 231 and you can get on I-10 to go east/west depending on where in the panhandle you need to go.
Anywhere else in FL and the ATL is the only way to go - even with rush hour traffic it will be faster than going around on back roads.
The I-285 loop was designed to allow traffic to go around Atlanta, but it has just become another parking lot...and going around THAT is a pretty big detour.
If you REALLY want to avoid Atlanta, PM me and I can give you some 4-lane roads to get you over to I-75 below Atlanta. I haven't looked it up but my guess is it will still be significantly longer.
I've been to Florida many times and my route always carries me through Atlanta. It has been my experience that there is no such thing as a shortcut around the city. Try to go through late as possible on either major route; that's what I always try to do and it seems to be a little more peaceful after dark if not less crowded.
if you have a gps use the avoid road feature and normally you can turn off interstates......course back roads might not treat you nice especially if you are lowered any..........when i travel to atlanta i actually enjoy it gives me time to appreciate my car
i live in Atlanta, and have to drive in it every day... i can tell you that in Rush hour time... there is no othe route that you can take without losing alot of time...
in rush our , EVERY highway.. is slowed down by traffic. in your case.. i guess your taking what 75? or 85? there are noother raods to take that would be FASTER than the bumper to bumper traffic..
alot of people think, "if i get off on one of the many side raods, it must go faster!"
side roads likie.. Buford Highway, Peachtree Industrial, Sugarloaf Parkway.. the list can go on, but sadly.. EVERYONE has this same thought.. so by the time you get out of the 6 lane traffic.. your now on a 2 lane small road with even more traffic and you wasted more time...
on major highways.. 75, 85, 285, 20, and 400..
the traffic is worst from..
6:30am- about 11.. mostly bumper to bumper here.. 5-15 mph
11-4 traffic flows, just not that AMAZING.. alot of cars.. around 55-65 Mph
4-6:30.. traffic again is crappy back to bumper to bumper 5-15 mph
7-the next day.. wide open for the most part, best time to travel
i have lived here for 8 years.. and unless that is a wreck, these numbers are pretty dead on.
all i can say is Bring someone with you, and hit the HOV lane. sadly its the only lane that still moves in rush our.. wish i could pay to be in that lane when im alone :-/
Jbondfl was correct... you can take 75 threw, or take the 285 loop to pass all of downtown area to get back to 75.. but you lose time, and the awesomeness of downtown. especially if its night time! lights r awesome..
Sorry i know this doesnt help to much
have a great dayand good luck!

feel free to send me a PM with where your coming from exactly, where your going exactly, and what time of day you will be around GA and i can tell you the fastest way!
Looks like about 20 miles longer than going through Atlanta. MapQuest shows about 50 minutes longer but that might be "negotiable" in heavy Atlanta traffic.
There's an HOV down I-75. it's the only lane that moves above 15mph during rush hour. 285 doesn't have an HOV lane. if you're gonig to take 285 around atlanta from I-75 take 285 west, It's shorter and the traffic isn't as bad as going around 285 east. but no matter which way you go the traffic is going to suck during rush hour.
