Default Starting problem

Today I took my 2003 Z in to the local Chevrolet dealer to get it smogged.
First some background on my car. I have owned it for nearly 2 years, and it is my daily driver. I drive it back and forth to work (about 15 miles each way) on weekdays. I don't drive it much on weekends. I have never had any kind of mechanical problem with the car since I've owned it.
I drove it about 30 miles today before taking it in to get it smogged, to make sure it was sufficiently warmed up. When I got to the dealer, I parked it and shut it off. It sat for about 5 minutes before the dealer went to start it. It would not start. The key would turn, but the starter did nothing. Everything else worked perfectly (lights, etc.) The dealer tried to start it, the smog guy tried to start it, and I tried to start it. Same results each time. I tried using the Fob to lock and unlock the car, and that worked fine. Finally I popped the hood and the dealer tapped on the side of the fuse panel/relay panel in front of the battery while I tried to start the car. It finally would turn over and fire, but would not stay running. After about 10 times of doing this, it started and ran perfectly. We shut it off and refired it probably a dozen times, and everything was fine. They went ahead and smogged it, and it passed with flying colors. Oh by the way, it was raining today. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Any suggestions of what might have happened? I have not had time to pull codes yet. Hopefully I can do that tomorrow. Also, I did a search and couldn't find my exact problem.

Just curious, what does the dealership charge for a smog test? Start by checking the ground connector the the fuse/relay panel. If that is not it, one of the relays may be going bad. Additionally, I recommend you check the starter's wiring and connectors.
The electical systems on these cars is extensive, do you have a service manual or wiring diagrams, I don't think you will be able to effectively troubleshoot without them.

The dealer charged me $55.00 for the smog test. As far as the starter wiring, I can understand how that would cause it not to start at all. But why eventually did it start, but not stay running, and finally after so many attempts, it started and ran fine? When doing the forum search of the problem, I found that the ignition key, ignition switch, or VATS was mentioned quite often on a no-start situation. That's why I mentioned that it was raining yesterday. Could a wet key cause a problem?
Yes I do have the set of 3 service manuals for the car. I still need to check the codes on the DIC to see if anything was stored.
Thanks for your help.

Default Update

Today I pulled the codes. It's quite a list! Some of the codes are repeated.

The list:

10-PCM ... P1631 H
40-BCM ... B2721 H, B2723 H, U1096 H, U1016 H
58-SDM ... U1096 H
60-IPC ... B0521 H, U1016 H, U1064 H, U1040 H, U1088 H, U1176 H,
U1160 H
80-RADIO ... U1064 H, U1016 H, U1096 H
AO-LDCM ... B2284 H, B2264 H
BO-RFA ... U1096 H

It's been nearly 2 years since the last time I cleared the codes, so this list has been accumulated in that amount of time.
Thanks again for any help you can give me.

One other recent event: Last weekend I took the car to the dealer for an oil change. I have had problems with the driver's side mirror staying adjusted when I use the remote to lock and unlock the car. I have reset it many times, but it still goes out of adjustment. I am the only one who drives the car, so the mirror should not move. Anyway I had the dealer check the problem. According to my invoice, he "reprogrammed software for vehicle as first repair". Before he performed this operation, he told me that the module in question was located inside the driver's door. My starting problem occured exactly 150 miles after he did the reprogramming. Probably just a coincidence, but I thought it might be useful info.
Thanks again.

See info in this link. The B2723 code you have is related to the PASS-Key and Security system.

Thank you for your response. There is some very useful info in both of those links. This weekend I will check the DIC again for codes and see if any have set, and then go from there. Thanks again.
