Default Leaky butt help!

I have the leaky butt on my 03 and I need to know what gaskets you guys bought. Did you just replace the left side or do both sides? Did you get the gaskets from GM or another company? And last but not least, what else did you do to ensure this never happens again? I know it's a lot of questions, but you guys are the best and I know I'll get some great advice. Thanks in advance.

I haven't had any problems with my '03, but had the leaking differential seal three times on my '00. Each time the repair was done under warranty. The second time besides replacing the seal the dealer also replaced the cover as it appeared that the cover was too porous and may have been causing some of the leak. Finally on the third try they went with a revised seal that GM had come out with and I never had a problem after that. Unfortunately, when I sold the car I gave all the maintenance records to the new owner so I don't have a part number for the seal.

I do have a number of Word files that discusses the repair procedure (with pics) and shows a part number for a rear seal. If you'd like a copy, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send them to you.

Alot of time you can clean the seal, shaft area real good, and the leak will stop. That is what I do to ALOT of seal leaks. Dirt gets on the shaft and as it spins it gets under the seals a little and holds it up and the oil leaks out. My 02z was leaking pretty bad. Put it on the lift, and cleaned everything real good, particularly the seal lip area, and no more leak. Learned that racing motorcycles for years. Might not work for you, but it's worth a try.

What is the advantage of taking the whole thing out and replacing the side cover gasket/sealant along with the side seals. Did you just want to make sure everything was taken care of? It looks like a lot more work to drop the whole cradle like you did but it does look nice to get everything cleaned up, not to mention the easier access.

If you had to do it again would you do it the same way?
