need confirmation ASAP on steering wheel sensor pic
[IMG][/IMG]
is this the correct way to put this on? the tabs are facing the sensor and not the front of car
isnt this the grommet everyone talks about that falls off when pulling off the steering wheel?....replacing the stupid SWPS...i stuck this in the hole in the firewall and it seems this is the only way it will fit but i just want to make sure.....
Thats a job I need to do myself. I've had the SWPS in the garage for months
Here's the picture from the manual which I think answers your question
It would be great if you could do a write up of your experiences as it doesn't come up very often
1. Install the following to the steering shaft:
adapter and bearing assembly (1)
Important
The steering shaft assembly must be rotated to the 12 o'clock position.
sensor assembly (2), refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .
sensor retainer (3)
steering shaft seal (4)
2. Install the steering column to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
3. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
It's not showing that end piece Hopefully it's the firewall gromet everyone talks about I'm 99.9 percent sure I have it on correct but another question would be is it suppose to be placed on actual column or placed in the firewall spot?
Would think either way would yield the same result?
"....12. So, now you put the column back in the car. You WILL dislodge the big grommet in the firewall, but don't worry about that at all. Use one of the upper nuts to loosely hold the column in place while you worry about getting the shaft joint to engage with the lower shaft stuff that's still in the car. It's easy, but a PITA. A second pair of hands would be great as you feed the shaft thru the firewall, but not mandatory.
13. Once you have the grommet on the shaft and that joint reengaged, loosely install the other three nuts that hold the column in place. Now you can get that grommet back into the firewall, all lined up. It just pushes in, nice and snug. I used a wood paint stirrer to work it all around from various directions, because even with the wheelwell opened up it's still difficult to get to. And THAT is why I think you should remove the wheel and the panel, as it's very difficult to see and reach from above. To me, that means it's very difficult to properly get it back in place."

Yes it is the firewall gromet I found it nearly impossible to put it back in from inside the car when you put the column back in. What I did was put the column back in without the gromet and slide it onto the column from the engine side of the firewall and then get it into place from that side. It is still a bitch to do but that was the only way I could do it.

DeeGee I did mine about 2 months ago using Tracy's procedure from your link above I took my time and it was easy enough to do the biggest PITA was replacing that firewall gromet. I was getting codes all the time and it has been perfect since. If you have the new sensor you should do it if you are getting codes. Keith (Eurovettes) got it for me delivered to my door for around £80.
