Would have been nice if you told us this the first time.
Thanks for your service!
Just will never figure it out. I have over $40,000 in receipts for the car. Sold most of the mods but really don't know if I should sell it because, well just because??
So if you want to get out and can come close to whole - why put it in storage and let it depreciate further. Sell it, invest the dollars and upgrade when you come back. Duh
One more time: Bring it here!!!! Enjoy the car. Letting the car sit idle for six months is one thing - four years!!!!! That's another. NEVER! Enjoy it. The weekend rides around the Island is breathtaking and only 100 miles. Being stationed at Hickam you will be 5 to 10 miles from the "action" in town/Waikiki.
The good: There are a few Vettes in our Club (Corvette Club of Hawaii) that have a few HP mods. (Two come to mind that put out over 600 hp.) Also we have a few service members in out Club. Good way to get to know the "locals". We get together 2 to 3 times a month. When you get here you can find us at Verbanos Italian Rest. in Pearl Ridge S.C. at 7 pm on the first Tuesday of the month. It's less than two miles from Hickam. We have about 60 - 70 cars in the Club.
The down side..... 1) Unfortunately the top speed limit is 60 mph. Get caught going 30 mph over the limit or exceeding 80 mph will get you in BIG trouble. 2) There are not too many places you can use the Vette to its full potential. (& no drag strips at this time.) 3) Gas (92 octane) right now is $4.36 a gal.
Bro! I'd keep it - you have done wonders to the Vette -
Try to be patient and enjoy it after your duty! It will be something to look forward to. It's American made you should be one who keeps it and enjoys it.
I purchased my 95 from a Pilot who was stationed at Andrews who was on orders to go overseas for a couple of years ... His reason was that he still had to insure the car even if he only carried liability and did not tag the car PLUS the C5's were coming out in a few years....
HOWEVER he ended up somewhere in Germany and e-mailed me months later that selling the car was a major mistake on his part as he could have sold it in Germany for a lot more then he sold it to me for...
Lots of angles to be considered... Personally I think I would sell the car ... 4 years is a long time...
thats the thing i only have 19,500 in the car. along with 2500 in paint and 1100 in wheels
the owner i bought it from had the mods put on and gave me all his reciepts
i will probly keep it and wasnt even advertising it being for sale. one of the pilots at work just came up to and said " i heard you got orders, ill give you 23 for your car"
i love this car and if i sold it i would look at c6 z06's
Sell.
That's a lot of car for the rinki-dink roads they have over there.
Did you really think you were going to ask that question on this forum and hear many people tell you to sell it? I think you wanted the answer you got.
Do this exercise...park your car facing a way from you....now turn around....look down at your hand and imagine the money in it.....look over your shoulder and imagine your buddy driving away smiling.....
Like the picture or not?
The incredibe thing about Corvettes is they are timeless. Whether it's a '54 or a 2011. A Z06 or a 1980 stocker. If you really want a Z06 anyway, maybe tell the guy it'll take 25K or more to get it. If he bites...which he might since he approached you....take the money and save some while in Hawaii (Good luck with that).
thank you guys for your advice. and yes i mostly got the answer i was looking for. i still dont think i will take it with me. i can only take one car(and have the military pay for it) and i think it will be my wifes cobalt. as much as it kills me i think its the smarter way to go. on the plus side i was told i can also take my motorcycle and ship it as household goods
guys from hawaii thank you for the invite. i hope i can catch up with you even though i wont have my baby

I think that's your best answer. If your dad doesn't mind storing it, keep it (although I don't think I'd put it on jack stands, It will need to be driven now and then to keep it fresh).
4 years isn't that long, really. You'll be back home in no time wishing you had it back. And you already know if you get rid of it it will be many many years before you'll be in a position to replace it.

If that's what you have invested than that gives you an indication of it's real value. Having $40,000 worth of reciepts doesn't mean a thing. The only way the original owner would have gotten any of that money back is by parting the car out and returning to stock again.
Sell it and get a C6 Z later. Especially considering the offer you have been made.

i to was uneasy about buying it, i wasnt like" oh he has reciepts it must all be there". i looked and they are all there with the exception of a few, im talking with a borescope and the whole 9 yards.

And here I thought you were a single guy.... Sell it! (You'll regret it later, but what the hell, we all have regrets.) The Colbalt will serve you well in Hawai, as will the motorcycle. Best way to see the islands is on two wheels. Ask me how I know.
However I have to caution you on sending the motorcycle as household goods. Check the military shipping regs. My brother retired as a shipping inspector for the military here in Hawaii. A Marine shipped his Harley with his household goods (remember only one vehicle allowed) to avoid the extra shipping cost. As it was an undeclared vehicle, without the shipping manifest he could not license it in Hawaii nor could he sell it. I bought my Silverado from California and my Vette from Texas. Trust me, you WILL need a shipping manifest.
FYI: A few years ago, I was stationed at HQ PACAF, Hickem. Air Force shipped my Vette from Virginia in a container to CA -- there it was removed and shipped to HI in the hold of a Navy cargo ship. When it arrived at Pearl Harbor, car was vandalized aboard ship: Walked on and kicked (ugly boot marks), luggage rack pulled out of fiberglass and thrown, vinyl hardtop slashed, half exhaust system missing, plastic ripped off seats, soggy interior, and about two to three bushels of heavy, rusty paint chips all over the car and up windshield that chipped/gouged everything. Before shipping, car took second in class at a car show. We wept.

So did you open up an investigation? How many guys on the cargo ship could have done it?

It would be hard for me to seel this car if it were mine.
Having said that, if the pilot who offered $23K would give $25K for it, I would be tempted to take the money and save it along with adding money I saved on insurance, license plates, tires, ets. and buy a used C6 Z06 after 4 years.
A C6z is the only car other than my C5 that cranks my tractor (of course a ZR1 would fire it up but cost more).
