I've got the so called polished thin spokes on my 2000. Does anyone know if these are sprayed with clear coat at the factory? The inside of mine seems to have what looks like peeling clearcoat. They polish up pretty good inside, but there is still some 'edges' where it lookks like the clear is breaking away.
If it is clear coat, is there a way of removing the existing and reapplying?
The OEM polished thin spokes are clear coated. They can be refinished by removing the clearcoat, polished and clearcoat reapplied. Options include on your own or professionally.

definitely clear coated. Several people have used metal stripper to get rid of the clear coat. Then you can actually polish them nicely. The clear dulls out (gets cloudy) after a while and there is no way to polish it without removing it.

Good advice here. If the clear is peeling in spots, then stripping the wheel, polishing the aluminum if needed and reapplying the clear coat will make them look like new.
the clear coat can be bought in spray cans. I'm thinking it can be applied by masking the tires. I don't think it'd be a god idea to spray the clear coat onto the rubber, it'd yellow pretty fast (Just a SWAG)
Ive been thinking of taking some 0000 steel wool and "scuffing" my barrels so they look like they're satin finished.. then using VHT clear coat... getting really tired of pulling teh wheels to polish the barrels

Don't bother re-coating your wheels as your "home applied" clear will flake off in no time.
Instead remove the clear coat by using a product called Tal-Strip made by Marhyde (google it). It comes in spray and wipe on formats. I used less than 2 cans of the spray to do 4 wheels. It will remove the clear coat easily.
Then, just polish the bare metal with any good polish - if you want them to look better then new, use one of those foam polishing ***** and a drill.
After that, just hit the wheels with synthetic wax (like Rejex) about once a month.
The thin spoke wheels have such simple thin spokes with no nooks and crannies that keeping them polished is a breeze.

sure Rejex works but how do you apply Rejex w/o adding micro scratches in the polished wheels
What everyone is refering to as clear coat is really a clear powder coat as so I have been explained by 3 different wheel refinishers.
GM does have a paint that body shops can and do use for refinishing of wheels but it is an aircraft paint and is $$$$.
If you really are ging to all the work of refinishing get it done right.

Just like you wax your car - with a fine cloth....or you can just polish them once a month - the wheels have such a simple design - 5 little smooth spokes - easy-peazy....
Jack - did you remove the clear coat with your tires on or off the rims?
I did it with the tire still on - I just masked them and went at it. The Tal-Strip product works almost instantly and you rinse it off with water from a hose so the rubber is barely exposed for just a few seconds....
Or you can do them with the tires off.
Please note that the barrels are also clear coated even on the inside and you should mask these areas off as the clear coat on the inside helps protect the rim over it life from moisture that typically builds up over time (compressed air is often very humid)...
