I searched and couldn't find a good "how-to" thread for diff fluid change on a C5 (z06, but I don't think it matters) I found a great one for the c6, just looking to read up so im prepared. anyone know of one?
There are some fluids that have an equivalent to the GM additive already in it. I think that Amsoil is one and maybe Royal Purple.
I prefer to use the GM fluids and additives. If you use the GM fluid, then the additive is necessary. Same with other brands that are equial to the GM stuff or meet the same GM specs.
You will find looking thru threads on this subject that there are varied opinions on what is the "best" or "proper" fluids to use.
My differential was chattering like crazy on slow, tight turns. Changed out the fluid to Redline 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil, and it's totally silent now!
No additive needed. It's already in the fluid.
These threads talk up Amsoil but you can use the GM-specified fluids or any good fluid that meets the GM spec for the type of fluid.
The only thing I would change on the differential service procedure is to drive the car for about 15 minutes or so to heat up the Fluid, especially if your in a colder climate.

Redline, goodstuff I like the 80w-140, just make sure you don't get the NS ones. The NS after the numbers means NO additive in it.
