Ok guys i've got a '98(January build month) and when i was doing the clutch i noticed mine did NOT have a rear mounted ABS unit. I thought all the early('97-98's) had the rear one. Mine is not in the back. I'm curious as to why this is? I'm not complaining i'm just surprised.~Cole~
Your correct. 97-98 builds , abs units were located @ the rear K member.
Starting in 99 they moved them up front near the altenator.
Consider your self lucky!

Yours is up front by the power steering unit, below the alternator

Not all '98's have them located in the rear 1997 - 1998 Early editions had them located in the rear of the Vette -
1998 Late - Up Models had them moved to the front of the vehicle -
So Cole you have the the Late 1998 model with it located up front!
Mine's a September'98 build, with the ABS unit in the rear.
You definitely would have noticed it while doing your clutch-it's about as "in the way" as it can be-adds quite a bit of brake plumbing to the tunnel also, which can get hung up on the shifter support if you're not careful.
The good news was ,the lines go back into shape pretty easy if you DO bend a couple of them...
well here is the the thing is according to my door it says it's a 01/98 so january of '98 and it still has the unit in the front. I'm not complaining, i'm very happy that i do it just struck me as VERY odd. ~Cole~
P.S. the door sticker VIN and the VIN on the cowl is the same so the date has to be accurate.
I realise that but these ones are easier to get ahold of are they not?
Cole,
In the post with the pics 1/1998 build it shows that you have a late year model Corvette - Why?
Because makes do not run from January to January of the next year - new models for the next year usually come out in September of the current year to september of the following year -
So for example mine was built in 1997 (I will check the door o find out exactly when when I get home) making it a early model 1998 - the '98 models continue to be built till around June -July , thus making your 1998 a late model '98 C5 (1/1998)and mine an early model '98 C5 (?/1997)
The 1997 C5 were beggining to be built in 1996 June/July till around 1997 June/July with the 1998's beggining to be built in July 1997 and coming out in September 1997
I realise that but these ones are easier to get ahold of are they not?

Sorry meant to address that too
There are two different styles and a few replacement part numbers for the EBCM - they are stocked anymore like stated.
Styles:
(1) Active Handling ABS Module
(2) Non - Active Handling ABS Module
"BUT" you can find them used (I must say it has become a rarer and rarer part to come by) -
The years you can salvage these from are 1997-2000 we all share the same module - but make sure you replace it with the same "STYLE" that you have on your Vette (Extremely important or it wont work) either with one that is Active handling equipped, if that is what yours is or one that is NON-Active handling -
If you have the number off the top of the Module I can tell you if it is Active handling or Non Active handling or you can look in the rear drivers side small compartment lid and check your build spec numbers - it will either be JL9 or JL4
Thanks for the info man. I was just going by that it was built in january, didn't even think about it like how you explained it. Well that's cool, i'm glad mines in the front that's for sure I don't have active handling in mine but that's fine with me

You're welcome Cole,
I have "ALL" the different part numbers for our Non-Active handling Vette's (which mine is too non-AH)
The modules are getting very hard to find - "BUT" keep this in mind I have an extra one I bought a while back when a 2nd one went bad -
I had replace the original one once before and found another one, then it went bad but I ran accross one with around 35,000 miles on it from a wrecked vette.
There is one in the For sale section here, if you got the funds I'd pick it up, if not remember I have an extra one on hand - (They are not cheap and his is very reasonably priced) and YES! $300 is a great price - ours cannot be rebuilt/repaired like the 2001-'04'shttp://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-p...ps2-tires.html
There really should be an available replacement for such an important part makes no sense to me
We all agree - but as per regulations the cut-off is 10 years so we are out on the island so to speak!
I also have an old broken one - if I could find someone to remanufacturer them in some way some how I would and I would be pretty well off doing it too
By fully examining these pieces, to me. it looks like it is the processor that takes a dump or overheats
Well why wouldn't an aftermarket company make them? i mean it's a major part that fail and not have a replacement. It'd be like the water pump going and not having one to replace them. Just stupid...

I know but it is what it is for now - I have a few ideas that I am going to run accross a few tech gurus and electronic gurus about this I just have to work too!
Believe me this has been hotly debated for a longtime and GM has been contacted too!
