I am wanting to do the Double DIN upgrade when I get back from my deployment. My problem is I am stationed in UK and I will need the Europe maps on the DIN. I am mainly doing this mod for the in-dash Navigation. I am not buying a European double DIN because I am only stationed in UK for another year and half and will need to switch back to USA maps. If anyone knows of a double DIN that can load Europe maps please let me know.
There is not a double din available with both maps. You will have to select one or the other for maps.
KEnwood has double din units for us retaliers here in the states and they have different models available for the European dealers. We can not get the European models as they do not stock them at Kenwood USA
I think your only possible option would be Sony. I am trying to find out if they will offer a new down load of European maps.
your prob gonna want to buy a radio there and sell it when you leave and then buy a new one here. In a year and a half who knows what will be the newest and greatest double dins anyways. You will have alomost 2 more models to select from.
Because of the differences in radio frequencies and tuning plus differences in the traffic management functions, most of the Euro systems are only good over here in UK.
I bought a Pioneer AVIC N1 in the US but I had to switch to an X1R when I came back to UK. The euro maps wouldn't load on the N series.
I'm not aware of any double DIN systems that work in both the US and UK.
Just out of interest, I fitted the X1 when I was still in the US. This is what the default map gave me sitting in my garage in Vegas............
As soon as it got a GPS signal when I fired it up at the dockside in Chatham it worked fine.
Darn thanks for all the info everyone. I sent clarion a e-mail because they have usa/european map upgrade downloads from teleatlas. I am hoping their nx501 is able to install the european maps without any issues. I will keep everyone updated when I get word back. It does not make any sense that your unable to cange maps on a $1000 nav unit.
+1 on a hand-held for the time being and a stateside Double Din of your dream choice.
While stationed in Germany, I broke down and got the TOM TOM 910. I am sure it has been far surpassed by now, but the TOM TOM 910 had all of Europe, Canada, and USA maps and was capable of being updated online. The good thing was, the TOM TOM 910 was uploaded with speed trap areas in Germany such as Photo Radars sites, etc. I was puzzled the first time a big red camera with a NO SPEEDING diagnal and a icon of a camera was flashing on my GPS while hauling ***. Hahahaha
Now that I am back stateside, I just use my Cell phone since it is most up to date all the time and has GPS for any place in the world.
