Default Flashing Check Engine Light

I did a search and didn't come up with a response that met my criteria.

I was parked for about 30 minutes after driving for 30 minutes yesterday. I started the car up and I didn't notice the light right away. It was about 10 seconds after driving the car when the car seemed to be hanging on to second gear a bit longer than usual. I then noticed the flashing engine light. I immediately pulled over and turned off the car. I didn't wait too long (maybe 15 seconds) before starting it up again. The light has not come back on.

Is this something I should be concerned about, or could it be one of those unexplained occurances? I have not scanned for codes yet but will at first opportunity.

Just wondered if this has happened to anyone else.

Pull your codes and post them-you probably have several H codes.

I had that happen once. I had left a coil pack unplugged after some work. I felt the car running a little rough, then the flashing light came on. I feared the worst, and pulled over at the nearest gas station.

As soon as I opened the hood I did a facepalm.

Run the codes, write them down and push reset.

Misfire. Get it checked out. Could be anything from a plug, plug wire, coil, or motor issues. Not worth not getting checked out.

Yup, that's the misfire notification.

I will try to scan for codes tomorrow if I get a chance.

What I want to know is if the light not coming back is a common occurrence? I don't notice anything problematic while driving.

Hopefully just a failing plug or wire...

Also, just in case... You do know you don't need a scanner to pull codes in the c5 right?

A flashing check engine light is the obdII standard warning for

Regular misfire codes don't flash. Other things can also happen to damage cats.
And yes it's ususally a bad misfire.

Finally got it scanned and looked at quickly. Apparently it is a P0300 history code with the worst offender looking like the #2 cylinder.

I was planning on doing plugs and wires on the car anyway so that will be taken care of sooner rather than later. Hopefully that solves the problem.

Any thoughts though?

Thanks

P0300 is a Random Misfire, a P0302 would pint to # 2 cylinder. The flashing CEL happens then the P0300 code is set if the midfire happens more than 2 times in a set timeframe.

The codes from the DIC do NOT show specific cylinders only the P0300 code, you need a different reader to get the other p030X codes.

A Tech 2 was used and the tech specified that the main culprit was cylinder #2.

Pull that plug and check it out. Possbly swap the coil wire with another cylinder and see if the problem goes with it.

Only around 40,000 miles of the car but I don't really like the fact that the plugs and wires are probably original.

Well the oem platinum plugs should last a helluva lot longer than 40k. Did you pull the cylinder 2 plug? Was it fouled?

Have fun with #7 when you do the new plugs and wires... That thing and I "argued" for quite a while.

I'm going to change them all regardless. I know they should last longer that 40,000 miles but I don't like that they've been in there for 11 years. I won't do the work myself. I have skilled GM techs that know this stuff inside out do it for me. One of the perks for being a GM employee!!!

Take a little plumbing loose around #7 and it isn't too tough to change!!
