Does anyone's engine "ping" during light acceleration around 1300-1700rpm or so? Does this have any effect on the engine?
I want to diagnose this noise I hear as light pinging, it sounds like a bolt is loose and its rattling on a piece of metal, if you know what I mean? Like a vibration a little bit. Only happens at ~1.3k to 1.7k in 1st gear, after that I cant really hear it because of other noise.
I just picked it up again a few days ago. I heard it very very faint last year, but I thought nothing of it Someone had me convinced it was something like an exhaust hanger?
The previous owner did have a 75 shot on the motor. Not sure if he had a tune or not.
I doubt it is the fuel because I just filled it up a few days ago and to my knowledge its still there. Have to wait for some good weather to drive the thing haha. Ill check the plugs tomorrow or Sunday.
I get some pinging like you described. Seems like the hot summer weather exacerbates it. Calif gas is pretty low octane which doesn't help.
I wonder if the coolant bypass would help. It does annoy me every summer.
I've had this issue of pinging the past two weeks myself. I'm sure the gas suppliers are jerking everyone around by filling tanks up with regular or plus gas. When I fill up with premium gas that's what I expect to get. BUT I suspect that the gas suppliers are not doing it.
I've been filling up at the Conoco stations at Brookshire Bros for the past 2 fill-ups. Something is fishy?

Two stations got busted this past spring because they were selling regular as every grade but diesel
Now when I go to the pump, I always ponder the thought if that 93 is really 93...
When I first got my 35kmi '01, it would spark rattle noticeably, and I was concerned. I believe it was never or not often run at wot. So every weekend on the same deserted road I would hit it to see what was up, after a few exercise sessions the pinging lessened until it no longer does it. The engine is quiet with no problems has good response and makes what seems to be good power for a bone stocker.
Just called my son who has heard through the grapevine at his company(one of the retailers of gas) that there was/is a shortage of Premium gas and they apparently have filled up the Premium tanks with something less.
Don't know how true this is and certainly don't know if it's a widespread practice. But I HAVE noticed it in the last 2 weeks.
I already called the gas suppliers locally and gave them a piece of my mind(recorded message) and it'll get deleted Monday by them I'm sure.

I can't believe a top tier station would do this, I know here in Nevada gas is checked on a regular basis, There would be big fines if they did in fact do this and got caught. Can you say BIG Liability?

I know my son said he'll call Monday and tell them my opinion. But I'm very sure that's the problem locally, cause I know how lower octane runs in these cars.
We'll see?
The OP should try different gas stations and see if his pinging goes away. I am next time.
I have been getting a slight knock recently between 900 and 2000 rpm and it always seems to be around .40 g/cyl but then again I did bump the timing up two degrees throughout the lower rpm range.

Believe me, this car has been run at WOT liberally by the previous owner. I do open it up every now and then though, so I dont think WOT'ing it would make a difference. Maybe it will since I haven't gotten on it in nearly 300mi (diff fluid change).
Please elaborate on "spark rattle" and what to check to see if it has that. I am guessing incorrect gaps for the spark plugs?

I tried Mobil last night, still pinging. Planning on running it as close to empty as possible and then filling up somewhere else. Probably a Shell.

I wonder, as a test, try some octane boost?? Maybe 1 tank and see results. Also someone mentioned that ethanol helps detonation issues.Don't they add that or something like that during the winter in some states?
Every other car with a computer I own has "knock sensors" which will retard the timing if you use sub-grade gas. Performance is definately degraded, but at least it wont grenade your motor.
I find it hard to believe the Corvette computer doesn't have the technology of my '97 Acura?
