Sorry for the rant BUTT- 18 months ago the 2001 started a small leak at the half shaft. So the dealer talked me into replacing the left side dif cover, like the TSB recommended, so i did,$550.00. Then ten months later the side cover got a leak (wasn't leaking there before). So I took it back and they said that time they will replace the side cover again because it must of been a bad cover, at no charge, billed GM "Good Will"they called it. Now I take it back , side cover leak again, problem is they are no longer a GM dealer (Cauley Chev in Det.) so they look at it and somehow they determine it's a bad carrier? IDIOTS. Will replace it for a mere $2700.00.
The original problem wasn't the side cover o'ring seal but the half shaft seal, so now this has grown to be a bad carrier. How convenient they just walk away from fixing the leak at the seal and blame the leak on the carrier, just to throw the expense on me, since they can't bill GM.
So now what should I do? take it to another dealer? Or fix it myself like I probably should of the first time. I so pissed at stealerships lack of Manning-up. I'm ready to go to small claims court over this.

The half shaft seal is actually an easy replacement procedure. I had it replaced under warranty. A couple years later, and out of warranty, it happened again. I replaced it myself in about 2 hours, taking my time. I believe I followed the write up from Mike Mercury for differential removal. Should be able to find it with the search function. Good luck either way!

If you can do it yourself, go that route since the dealer can't seem to get it right. I too had problems with a leaking rear differential on my '00 - was finally fixed by the dealer under warranty on the third try (two seals and one side cover).
Guys I know this might not be the popular opinion, but I had a small case of leaky but syndrome that was discovered while doing a entire car fluid change. The guy that owns the shop that I take my Z to put a little Lucas treatment in the rear end when he changed the fluid and said if it was still leaking when I came back to get my clutch installed we'd fix it then. When I came back to get the clutch installed the leak was fixed.
I know there are some here that don't like the Lucas products and I don't want to get a discussion on that here. I am just giving my experience and $.02.
I had to bring mine back 5 times...they replaced the cover the seals 3 times and the axl it seems all these vettes have the same problems with this one being the most pain in the ***...u could ask one of those gm mechanics if he would be interested in fixing your car on his day off...there by cutting out the middel stealership.

Thanks Jerry- I'll prolly regret not buying it but I just got word that they'll reseal it at there cost. They manned up.
That is a terrific price you got on that rear end. I do have the 3:42 and I think that could be part of the problem. I think I get a lot of windup on that carrier when I jump on the gas and it just flexes the carrier to where it twists and breaks the seal. Hopfully the 3rd time is the charm and I'll get a good seal this time. I'm a design engineer for a large teir one automotive supplier and see this stuff all the time. Theres alway a reason for a problem, and sometimes it's just workmanship. These problems just drive me nuts.
To top it off I just had a large tree branch break off a oak tree a smashed the bow of my custom tunnel hull drag boat thats part in my yard last nite. Oh well, when it rains it pours.
BTW- service tech was no help, the service chief was the one who listened to me and is getting the job done and he will be personally supervising the entire repair process. It pays to talk to the right people and be calm and direct, without lossing your temper and saying whats really on your mind.

Ok, glad you got back so soon. I really wanted to help you out here and at the same time avoid shipping this 80 lb box. I hear ya on the design issues...I worked for Ford Chassis Engineering and understand exactly what you are referring to. Best of luck solving this knotty problem...
I don't know if this will help or not but I've been through this issue about 5 different times. Most of the leaking was on the drivers side of the diff. but on occasion I was also getting drops from the right side.
GM has a tech bulletin that tells the dealership to use an "anarobic" sealant which the dealership was doing that I took the car to. After about the 4th time, the mechanic that was actually doing the repair work told me he wanted to go back to the original sealant material that GM used at the factory. He felt that there was enough "flex" in the rear end to crack the seal that start the leaking all over again.
The last time (4th time) was 3 years ago and have not had any problems since except for a small drip that was coming the plug on the right side of the diff. If you need more info. pm me and I'l give you some phone numbers at the dealership that did the repair and they may be able to give you more specific advice. Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be.
Good thread. I have been trying to figure out what to do for my leaking a#*. Thought I might be alone with replacing the seal 4 times. Looks like I have some hope now.
