Well, I've got the paint bubbles on the deck of my rear hatch. I've done enough research to know what is causing it and that it was a known issue with some of these cars. My question is for those of you out there who have or have had the same issue...what should I expect for the next several years? As of now, everything is under the surface and you really only see the bubbles when you have light reflecting off the surface. There are 4 places where they appear, 2 each to the left and right of the rear emblem toward the back of the hatch. There is 1 bubble that looks like it could possibly be close to creating a pinhole size break in the paint, but it's not there yet.
My car is a 2000 with very low miles and always stored inside so hardly any exposure to the elements and not a lot of UV exposure, but obviously that didn't matter.
Should I expect it to continue getting worse or have there been instances where the bubbles appear under the surface but that's all?
Let me know your experiences with this issue. thanks.
I have a 98 Vert and there is evidence of micro bubbling along the inside edge of the truck lid valley. I am not sure what has caused this but I imagine it was poor paint preparation. This bubbling goes from one side to the other and is fairly consistant in width. It is not getting any worse in the year that I have owned the car.
Is yours on the outside or inside. Do you have pictures? That might help.
Common issue, there was a TSB on it (do a search)-these is insulation on the back of the decklid that leeches a contaiminent through and bubbles the paint-the only fix is a NEW decklid. Once the leeching happens, nothing short of cutting the section out or replacing the entire lid will cure it.
I noticed it on my 02 about 4 years ago. Since then I have payed close attention to all c5 coupes at all of the vette shows that I have gone to. I would say 80% of the coupes that I look at have the same blistering in the same area. Mine hasn't gotten any worse and all of the ones that I see are about the same. I took the bulletin to my dealer and tried to get GM to make good but I was out of warranty by the time that I noticed it, and they arent making any exceptions for me. I have never had anyone notice it on my car and I bet alot of the ones that I see have owners that dont know about it. Mike
I had a 99 Firebird that had bubbles along the edges of my roof line when it turned 7 years old. The dealership said GM had a problem with the adhesive they used to glue the fiberglass to the metal frame. Something about chemical leaching that caused it to bubble the paint. Fortunately GM approved getting me a new roof and paintjob.
