Default Front Brakes

Just had my 2003 Coupe at the dealer for a Virginia State Inspection. I was advised my front brake pads are at 3/32" and I'll need to have the front pads replaced soon. I'm the original owner of this daily driver with 71,000 miles. My question is do I need to have the rotors turned or replaced when I have the front brake pads replaced?

71,000 miles on the original rotors? Rotors are pretty cheap, why not replace them?

Just did the same thing.......

Kept the originals to turn and store,..........if they are not too thin.

Installed Centrix rotors and Hawk pads,...........I think the rotors were 65 each and the pads 110 or so.

My perception is that this set up is an improvement over stock in both grabbing power and smoothness.

I would replace the rotors rather than turning them.

But FWIW I am pretty sure I have the original rotors on mine and I have 102 on it now. My camaro which has 130 on it still has the original fronts as far as I know( they have at least 50 k on them) and the rears were only replaced because the inspection place insisted that they were warped, Im pretty sure it was just friction material buildup now that I know a little more, but they wouldnt pass it.
Now the only reason I havent replaced mine is because they are still within specs and I dont race it either.

The general rule I've been told is if the rotors were turned once before then you don't want to do it again and should get new ones. If they weren't turned before then it's on a case by case basis of how bad they are and if they can be turned and if they are worth it. If they can be turned but will only last a year after that then you should just get new ones. You can get some pretty nice ones for cheap. Just do a search on that. Heck you can get whole sets of rotors and pads for cheap, under 300 I think.
Good luck.

There is a minimum thickness spec, put a mic on the ones you have and see how thick they are. If they are not warped and mic out OK, I'd clean em' up and use them.

It'll cost more if you have to replace them later. Do the rotors at the same time.

I would replace them, there are a number of inexpensive quality rotors out there to use which will equal or surpass the std rotors performance.

At the bare minimum the rotrs should be cut. We can hook you up with rotors and pads. Please feel free to give me a call or shoot me an email

For the reasonable cost of new rotors, might as well just get new ones.
