I was killing time in Books-A-Million while my wife was shopping elsewhere this afternoon and read an article on a Gear Vendors overdrive unit for the C5. Now that is something I might give my 6 speed up for. Anybody else see the story? I looked at so many mags, I don't remember which Vette mag it was in. Don't get too excited if you haven't heard about it before, you can't buy one!
This happened back in 2002...gm's special proj mgr linked up with Gear Vendors to develop a new tranny for the C5.
plan was to debut the car at SEMA that same year. ended up receiving the best engineering award at the show.
GM apparently screwed the company Gear Vendors with an underhanded pull-the-plug. Perhaps, because another vendor Hydramatic was already developing a 6 speed auto for the C6.
this was to be a limited edition setup with 8-speed auto and paddle shifters priced at about $4000.
The article stated that as part of the development of the system you of course needed a modified/revised torque tube and drive shaft. After winning the SEMA award they had placed a 1000 unit order with Uni-Drive, the supplier for our stock torque tubes and they were getting OEM (GM) pricing. After GM pulled their support the article said that pricing for the necessary pieces needed to complete the install was near $4k. Article stated that the owners of Gear Vendors spent a cool 1 million dollars in R&D on the project!!

Typical GM they bankrupt a lot of good companies this way!
