Default Question about claimed hp...

I'm looking into this 01 z06 that has an air intake and software as the only mods.

The current owner says the previous owner got it dynoed and it had 430hp.

Is that possible? I don't have alot of knowledge about these cars as it will be my 1st ever corvette.

Thanks

No. Impossible. Even if he's talking about crank hp, instead of wheel horsepower, that number is unattainable for a 01 Z06 with those mods. No way he's gaining 45 hp from intake + tune.

EDIT: for further explanation - some dynos are known to be "happy" when compared to others that are more realistic. It's possible that he has a dyno pull whose numbers, when estimated at the crank, are in the neighborhood of 430 hp. But that doesn't mean that these numbers are actually indicative of what's occurring in the real world.

We'd have to assume it was a chassis dyno.

Bone stock, a C5 Z06 makes around 360 RWHP.

Given the tall tale, I would sure find someone local that knows Corvettes to do a pre-purchase inspection...

Right, and that's even considered healthy for 02-04 models. The 01's should be closer to 340, I think.

The seller doesn't sound too trustworthy. This doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with the car, but better safe than sorry.

That's just car BS talk. It used to be easy to get away with in the hot rod days; but now everything is so well established, documented and shared that we know within 5-10hp where a car with x mods should be horsepower wise. An 01 with an aftermarket air intake and tune is realistically putting out ~400hp at the engine.

Good catch on the year varience!

Agreed that it doesn't mean anything bad for the car...but just more care in the process.

Yeh thats what I had said that it's not possible.

Thanks guys. I will be getting the car up on the lift and check properly.

Oh and What's different with 02+ z06 that it has 405hp? Different Cam?

Slightly better flow on air intake, cam, and eliminated pup cats.
