Agreed....poor/inaccurate word choice on my part. I suppose I could have gone with "alternative air filter set up", but then again, Im sure someone would have had heartburn with that as well.

And I thought things were crazy over at my usual home CFOT.
very good! i bought a used cheap blackwing and cut that same hole in my shroud, just bigger
I've had your same setup with the Blackwing for about six years now. No issues or regrets. Works like a charm, especially in cooler/colder weather. Even in warm weather,at higher speeds , the intake charge is denser, and the HP bump is noticeable, exactly the way its supposed to.
I just did this mod to a 2000 I bought. Picked up .3 in the 1/4 with just this mod. I was stunned. 14.00 (deep staged) before the mod. 13.697 after the mod (also deep staged) Not bad for a 30 dollar investment. (BTW, went five rounds so it wasn't a fluke)
I got tired of ill-fitting aftermarket $200+ intake/filter set ups. So after going on Hot Rod Magazine's Power Tour this year, and seeing Spectre's line of products, I went down to Auto Zone and picked up one of their conical filters for just under $30. It can be cleaned with either the K&N or Donaldson Blackwing cleaning kit (depending on which filter you purchase, red or blue) and fits nicely. I had to cut a small hole in the radiator shroud so that it would sit flush, which means that its now picking up cool air headed for the radiator.
See pics below, and let me know if you have any questions. Its all part of my update to the underhood including relocating the coils packs, SBC valve covers, removing the hood liner in favor of painting the under side flat black, and aftermarket fuel rails.
Nice DIY.
Question: Which color filter uses the K&N cleaning system, the red or the blue?
That figures as I already have a K&N cleaning kit left over from a K&N filter I had in my previous car but have blue filters on my current CAI. Oh well, it's just money....

Nice mod, as good as many of the high $$ ones for sale.
FYI, I read in another thread on this topic that CAI can really make a difference in the C5 due to the air inlet temp sensor retarding timing, as much as 10 degrees in fact. So that sort of computer intervention throws the hot rodder rule of thumb off.
The conclusion seems to be Honker and Vararam are best if cost no object. Since I already have a K&N panel filter I am thinking of going the flip-tie route for now since cost is nil.
