Took my wife out to dinner last night and on the way home drove down a 4 mile stretch of road being widened from 2 lanes to 4. Speed limit had been 45 and I didn't see a sign to the contrary as we turned onto the road from the highway.
About a mile in I just see a police car parked off to the side of a roadgrader. I just caught a glimpse of his markings as we went by.
Sure enough, I see his headlights appear behind me. I slowed from 45 to about 40 when I saw him, and my radar detector didn't alert so I figured he hadn't clocked me.
At that point I saw a Speed Limit 35 sign so I slowed to 35. He just sat behind me for the next 3 miles.
We came to highway and I made a right turn on red after a full stop, there was little traffic.
He followed me onto the highway but I knew I was in the clear.
After about a mile he flashed me with his radar, a parting shot, I guess, (my detector alerted). He then took the next U turn and headed back from whence he came.
He must have thought he had a ticket written with a Corvette on an empty road. I was happy to disappoint him.
I don't understand why the police assume Corvette drivers exceed the speed limit. They should know that we're so fanatic about our cars, we're afraid of a pebble bouncing up at high speeds.

If that happened around here all he wanted was to do a bit of road racing. And you disappointed him. I had 2 Sheriffs at a 7-11 today tell me they think they could take me. I laughed and said I bet you could take me.....to jail. They just laughed.
If he was thinking of citing you for speed, (or anything else) he took way too long to decide not to. I think he was just trying to annoy you for some perverse reason.
I'll bet he was a little bored so he fell in behind you and called his dispatch to run your plates for possible wanted info/stolen, etc. While waiting for dispatch to get back to him with info he just followed along, probably monitoring for a little weaving, possible DUI.
When nothing panned out he just discontinued his adventure!
I've been followed like that and I think this explains what's going on, he ends up with no probable cause to light you up and just goes on to something else.
On the bright side it would be great if he was getting your stolen corvette back for you!
I drive 5-8MPH over the speed limit at all times. I do it regardless of highway patrol or cops around. They're not going to pull over a Vette owner for doing 5 over. When I got my first Z06, I was doing 81 on cruise control at about 2am in a 65 zone. Highway patrol was behind me for about 2-3 miles, never pulled me over, and just cruised right along with me. Eventually he got off at an exit about 3 before my own. Funny thing is that while I was a *little* worried, my friend (a CHP officer) told me that most of the guys he works with could care less about pulling over Vette owners unless we're doing something really stupid, so I just held my ground just to see. (Risky, I know. But it would look worse if I hit my brakes or suddenly slowed down, right?)
I don't normally drive that fast though. I usually cap my speed at about 73MPH. It's a safe number and I've cruised next to lots of CHP doing that exact speed for MANY miles while other drivers around us slowed to 65 and we passed them up. LOL

. . . or perhaps he was just driving in that general direction. I often wonder how many people thought I was following them when I was on patrol and just happened to be behind them for several miles.

LOL! I have to say that's one of the most annoying things ever. When I used to drive my Trans Ams and my 300zx, I was ALWAYS worried that you guys were following me.
I'd say the Leo wasn't disapointed. If he wanted you, he would have pulled you for something even if the judge threw it out later. I'd guess, he just liked watching your vette. I know I love to follow vettes down the highway even when I'm in my pickup truck!
