Default Clutch/Trans Issues

Hey all, hope you're enjoying the summer!

So yesterday I was doing some "spirited driving" and shifted from 2nd into 3rd at about 5k RPM. Right when I pushed towards third and heard a loud grinding sound (like when a shift is rejected). The shift was still successful and the car rode just fine in gear.

The problem started immediately after I went out of gear and tried shifting into third again. Now, every time I shift it makes a LOUD (LOUD LOUD LOUD) grinding noise. Once the car is in gear it drives fine.

The grinding doesn't happen at anything under 1.5k RPM. However, if I'm just sitting idle and press the clutch and shift into third right afterwards it'll still grind. If I'm idling and press the clutch in and wait about three seconds then shift into third it won't grind.

Soooo, here are my theories:

- Syncros are done.
- Shift fork pads shattered
- Shift fork bent

On top of this I also have the infamous "popping out of reverse with a violent vengeance" issue. It seems to me like I'm going to have to replace my clutch and trans.

I'd really love some input from the awesome people of corvette forums because I am a mere infant in car knowledge compared to you guys! Please help me!

I really would appreciate it!

Oh sorry, I'm bone stock power wise with the exception of a CAI. Car only has 18.5K miles on it currently.

Other mods are just lowered on stock bolts (minus bushing)

What year Z? Never mind, I just read your info. OK sounds like it's one of the things you've mentioned inside the trans. As you probably know, the '02s...me too, have tinfoil transmissions. If it makes it any easier, I don't think your clutch is failed.

Heard some bad noises, today myself. I've been sick since last Fri. and it's been perfect weather the whole time, so I thought I'd take my modded Z out for a ride. I blew up either the diff, or the trans, but my money's on the diff. Hit 4th gear hard, and, crunch. Got her flat bedded home by a great tow guy, and she's sitting in my garage, but I'm still too ill too jack up and see what I can. Good luck to you, too.

On second thought, it may be your torque tube bushings.

yea it is a 2002 Z06.

If it is the torque tube bushings then it would be much cheaper to fix right?

I'm getting ready to see the worst news and order a new trans (might as well get a C6Z clutch as well).

Yeah the TT bushings are a much easier, and cheaper repair, and fairly well known to be a problem. I didn't change mine when I put my new clutch in.....yeah, I know.....

Well, I had the same problem but mine was 5th gear. I was lucky as I had just sold my 72 Camaro and had some extra cash. I changed flywheel, clutch, trans and TT couplings. Cost about 5 grand and everything is great now.

LOL I'll make sure to change them then.

This was my fear. As soon as I heard the crunch I winced.

How come you needed a flywheel? Did you get one just to be safe?

Now I'm wondering if I might be able to get away with just rebuilding the trans or if that's just a waste of time.

If it grinds in any gear as long as the motor is above 1.5k rpms my guess would be either the syncros or the shift fork. Either way I think you're looking at removing the tranny/diff.

Well, I know my diff. is dust, but I'm not sure about my transmission. Is there a test, like running through all the gears while stationary, that would give me a clue as to the condition of the tranny? Crap, Serephus, I didn't mean to hijack. Sorry.

Don't worry about hijacking zeevette, I don't mind lol. I can row through my gears just find while stationary.

Enigma (or anyone), do you know of a good place to buy synchros and/or other parts I may need for the drivetrain?

Are you able to rebuild your own trans? There's a thread that you can upgrade the internals to C6Z state. I'll see if I can find that link for ya.

Rebuilding my trans is past my skills and resources unfortunatley. Although I'd still like to see that link you are talking about. I plan to buy the parts myself so I don't pay too much and just have the labor done by a trusted shop (which I also need to find, I'm thinking RET in Downey, CA).

I would contact RPM Transmissions here on the forum. Send your tranny to them and either have it upgraded or get a level 4 or 5. Then bring the transmission to a shop for the swap.

You don't even have 20k miles on it and you are basically stock... I don't see how anything could be worn with "typical" driving...

Any chance you have an aftermarket shifter? My guess would be your shifter has moved and is no longer aligned properly.

Did you miss a shift a some point?

I don't think that shifter misalignment can cause the grinding sounds that Ser is having. Just as a old school test, you could try double clutching on shifts. Not very helpful, but could lead to syncro problems.

My dads z06 had the same problem in the same exact gear and only had 20k on it. Had to drop it and went sent it over to RKT56 on the boards here. It was a blocking ring I believe.
