2 parts water 1 part simple green in a spray bottle. Make sure the motor is cold, cover alternator, spray the motor down and let it sit for a few minutes, scrub the bad parts with a soft brush then rinse the motor off with a water hose and let dry.

that'll do it just fine
You can always run the engine for the final rinse and leave it running 5 to 10 mine to ensure no water remains (take off your alternator cover if you use one).

BTW, thats a very light spray with the hose when done, doesnt take much to rinse it. I also find one of those things you wash the dishes with (the pom pom looking spongy things) works well to loosen the dirt. I leaf low it off when done (while its running) but thats really not necessary. As a last step I lightly spray the whole area with Aerospace 303 Protectorant and close the hood (dont need to wipe it, it will be all dispersed when it dries).

Aerospace 303 Protectant is the BEST for your plastic and vinyl, makes your interior look like it's new. And, use Aerospace Hi-Tech Fabric Guard for your convertible top, water will just bead on it, and it protects from UV.
if its not TOO dirty, here is a process I picked up on this forum and has worked real nice for me. (I take the fuel rail covers off and wash them
separately)
with engine warm - spray everything very liberally with Windex - close
the hood and let it sit 1/2 hr.
open hood and spray with a hose - not a nozzle or pressure washer
while still wet spray well all over with ArmorAll - close hood and let
sit for another half hour or more
open hood and wipe with a soft towel
note if you have very dirty areas, use simple green first - be sure
to rinse it thoroughly

Quite a few owners clean the engine bay that way. And once you get it clean, just be sure to wipe the engine bay down with something like an Absorber each time you wash the car. Makes keeping the engine bay clean pretty easy.
I hope Dave doesn't mind me piggybacking on his thread. I actually was detailing my engine last night in preparation for a show this weekend.
The issue that I have is that I removed the hood seal at the base of the upper cowl vent panel and while I was wiping it down there was a round foamy piece about 14-16" long that wound up in my hand when I was done. Does anyone know where this should be? Engine side? Windshield side? Tucked in somewhere, etc.
I don't believe so. It wound up in my hands as I was wiping down/drying the hood seal that runs from inner fender to inner fender. I had done the batter box seal several minutes earlier. Unless it should be between the two somehow, I don't think that it is involved.
Thanks for the thought. I'll actually check later when we get back to detailing for the big show this weekend.
