This weekend I started my C5 in the driveway and got out of the car to do something and I heard a clicking sound coming from the engine. My car is still under a service plan from the dealer. I called him and he is going to take a look at it on Saturday. He told me there may not be a problem and this normal for an engine that has not warmed up yet.
Is he blowing smoke or telling the truth.
if it sounds like a lifter, and it stops after a few minutes when the engine warms up a little, mine does that, and from what I read here on the forum, it is normal. Mine won't do it for several starts, then it will again. I have 31,000 mi on my '02 convert.
GM Piston Slap. Normal to the best of my knowledge.
I was thinking here the 327 350hp was bad for the piston slap even when new off the floor. I have had a # of newer vettes not one had piston slap like you are talking about but the c2 327 350 motors. May have a lifter going down if you bitch some with the dealer they will put a set of new ones in for you.... Robert
Hi, I am new to this....just got my first vette. 2000 c5. had a clicking sound, took it to a shop, dude said definatly a $2500 lifter job. took the car to a friend of a friend (a gm guy) and in 30 sec. said it was the acc pully and belt. $70 bucks fixed! good as new!
Just sayin!
There are some good guesses in here; but we really are just guessing without a sound clip or at least a little more info. It could be piston slap which is a fairly common issue but is not "normal" and should be addressed. If it's a ticking sound that increases in frequency with engine speed it could be as simple as an exhaust leak. It could also be a failing component in your valvetrain like a rocker arm. Could also be your a/c compressor clutch (not very likely based on your description). Are there any other symptoms? Do you have any DTC's present?
Record a sound-clip of the noise and upload it to youtube then post it in C5-Tech... Don't ever let a dealer get away with telling you something is "normal" that only just started occurring when you've owned the car for a while without the symptom. If you have a warranty, its a helluva lot cheaper for them for the problem to be "normal". The LS1 in your C5 should sound like a sewing machine running at high speed...
