Drone Question
Last edited by memmer; Aug 26, 2011 at 07:22 AM.

For several years now we've had a deep, aggressive, muscle-car sound in our Corvette S-Type exhaust. You'll also hear this system called "Stinger" by our customers. That full-fledged note came with the trade-off of increased cabin resonance (drone). After much feedback from the Corvette community, we redesigned our exhaust systems.
Our new S-Type kit keeps all the character and traditionally aggressive sound while eliminating all drone at any RPM, in any gear. The same goes for our two other C5 options – Touring (mellow) and ATAK (our loudest). I've included a link to the original press release with more information below. Please reach out to me if you have any questions; my direct line is 805-246-6000. Best of luck in your exhaust search & happy motoring!

Oh, sure. NOW you bring these out. Where were you two months ago when I wanted Borlas but bought Corsas because of the lack of drone!!!
AAAAARRGGHH!!

Good to Know! But I would also like to know the ACTUAL reason why all these systems, regarless of brand are so expensive.

While the B&B Bullets are significantly louder than stock and louder than most aftermarket I did not notice a significant increase in cabin volume, it was louder sure, but that is because its a performance exhaust...I could hear my stock exhaust when I drove around too.
Maybe I just dont understand. It seems some people want to go aftermarket but not have the noise level inside the cabin increase...seems counterproductive to me. Thats like saying I want to put a supercharger on but I dont want any gains in HP.
Maybe I am...

Most aftermarket exhaust give tremendous, satisfying sound at WOT. But while cruising, whether at 30 or 70 mph, one would expect the sound of the exhaust not to vary much minute by minute.
Suppose the exhaust sounds pleasant while cruising at 60 mph, but at about 62, the exhaust sound in the cabin begins to get louder. At 65 it becomes so loud, one has to shout in order to be heard by the passenger. At 70, the sound reduces, and by 75 the sound returns to the level it was at 60.
That's drone. That's like your audio system sound like crap only between 65 and 70 mph, but normal either above or below that speed.
Members, please correct any errors in my description - I have Corsas, so I don't have drone, but I do remember having such an experience years ago with another vehicle setup.

like wanting to put a lift kit and monster mudders on your 4X4 but not wanting tire noise on the road.
i like the way my car sounds with stingers, and i'm the one who has to be happy with it.they make all kinds of different exhaust systems and it's hard to give a good description to someone because what you like may not be what they like, and something may annoy them even if it doesn't you. i don't even notice any drone that i may have, and i don't personally care for the corsa sound. i may hear a car and say it sounds good, but i don't want that sound for my car.

Everything is a trade off.. you can not have great Idle, great WOT and great cruise with no drone.. to eliminate the drone you have to limit the idle tone, ... conversely increase the idle tone, and you increase the cruise drone.. Corsa knew this 13 years ago.. So did Borla, this isn't secret stuff.. Borla bet on people wanting a great aggressive muscle car idle and were willing to allow drone at cruise to achieve this.. Corsa Bet on people wanting any drone.. and have advertised this with their lifetime guarantee. This is not a revelation.. I have been reporting this for over ten years here on this forum..
Driving around town with Borlas is fine because you are constantly changing speeds/rpm...So you don't notice it, But if you have a steady diet of 70 mph on a highway for an hour or so, you will pay for it.. I know many who get sever headaches from this drone after an hour, I also know of many people who bought them and now their wife refuses to get in the car.. which for some could be a plus... There is nothing more uncomfortable to hear than this drone while trying to carry on a conversation while driving down the highway for a few hours.
