In the middle of a compressor/water pump replacement on my car & I come across this black cooling device & embarrassed to say I don't know what it is or its function. It looks pretty beat up & wondering if I should replace it. Anyone?

My guess would be an oil cooler.

Z51 or a Z06? Looks to be the PS cooler.

I too have an 03 Z.
It is indeed a cooler for the P/S.
If you follow the rubber line @ the bottom of the P/S resevoir, you will see that it leads back to the finned/cooler.
I would be on the lookout for a used cooler & replace.
That one pictured just looks horrible!
Mine looks as brand new.
I'm thinking some one removed your steering rack & foobered up the cooler, doing so.
Good luck.

Clean it out and straighten the fins and you will be as good as new! No need to waste money on a perfectly fine cooler!

Thanks,Matt

Yep. Had a slow Beemer mess mine up once.

If that puppy is not leaking, spray it down with Simple Green, rinse, then spend a few quality minutes with your PS oil cooler. A little semi-gloss black paint when you're done and good as new.

believe it or not, it's just as functional as it is, as long as it isn't leaking...we ran tests on such parts in the chassis lab and there was no difference in temperature of the ps fluid....

My guess is it probably happened during my A&A SC install. Maybe one of Andy's guys had a bad day & took it out on my poor cooler

I called Gene & he has brand new ones for $131, so to me thats cheap enough to replace. I told myself before calling that if it was $200 or more, I'd pull the old one & repair/paint.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I love this forum!

GunLuvr, I agree w/you 100%
You know, if guy's don't do repairs, as they come up, before too long they have basically a junk car.
Let's keep them as new.
Oh by the way, I had it right in the first place?
It probably happened, when they pulled the rack to do the S/C.
Couldn't see by the picture, where they should have pinned the H/balancer to crank?
Good luck.

Yep you had it right. Just based on the location of the dents, I'm leaning towards them having set the s/c assembly on top of that cooler so they could install the oil return hose (which is located on the bottom of the s/c assembly). I downloaded the A&A instructions & saw where it says to position the assembly to where you can reach & install that hose from the bottom. Just a guess...
