I would lose the "friend" and save your money.
I've spent too much money on mine so it can be faster, but that only sets you up to spend MORE money on being faster still!
Then you get to the point that everyone WANTS to run you and see how their hotrod compares.
Then the club members look at you like you are a "Hooligan" or a "Tool" so it's never just a easy process of making a screaming Vette.
BUT I LOVE IT! Now go out there and beef up the car and SPANK HIS ^%$#
