I went with the plastic one. The last one lasted 13 years! (1998). I couldn't see paying three times more for a brass one. I got it at Advance auto parts. $12.96.
The early motors (97-99) have the three screws that holds the cover on.
It wasn't a bad job but I did remove one extra item to make it a little easier. Since I already had the headlamp bulbs disconnected I went ahead and removed the headlamp globe. Only three screws. I like working with plenty of room. It made a big difference.
When I removed the old gear the teeth were fine, but it was busted and cracked halfway through. Now it's all quiet again.

Not sure but I can imagine a lot. It's easy to do. Go to the tech section and click on the ultimate DIY thread at the top. There is a nice how to on it

I dont even want to think about it. Probably the cost of two new motors (because they wouldnt open the oem motors and do the gears) and pick a number....three hours? (conservatively).
You are going to be paying probably around $250 to have a dealer do it, and you will just be getting plastic gears and who knows if they will be careful not to scratch the paint!
You can get a complete set of brass gears and other upgrades (kit) from Rodney Dickman and do it yourself in probably one to two hours if you have not done it before, significantly less if you have done it before and know exactly what to do. Plus you will feel better knowing you did it and you were as careful as you wanted to be.
a piece of cake if you do it yourself now if i can only figure out PULL KEY AND WAIT 10 SECONDS, i think it is the dealers fought from the steering lock installation and they want to charge me $95.00 to look at it
