So much has been written and said about their failure. I am just curious as to how long many of them have lasted? How many miles does everyone have on an original without failure?
My 98 had less than 16,000 miles on it when it gave up. I will have to add however, that I suspect it had more to do with age than mileage. Rubber gets hard and fails over time. The bonding process that is used to mate the outer and inner components is a big variable also. If you have any doubts about yours......................have it checked and replace it before it does damage.

Kinda off the subject, but I was wondering the same about the abs module on the 97-00.Do they all fail.I have a 98 and thinking of getting newer model one to avoid tracking down one.
I'm going to do the labor myself; actually I'm going to use it as an excuse to justify putting in a cam and and underdrive pulley
Mine went bad but it was an underdrive pulley. After talking to JP at 21st Century Muscle Cars in Dallas we both agreed that underdrive pulley failure rates are high and not much is gained so we replaced with a stock GM part. I had 38k miles on the car when it failed, and probably had installed the UD pulley at around 10k miles.
a friend of mine told me the balancers were a problem on these, what do you replace them with? is there a gm updated version or something aftermarket?
You can replace it with stock or buy an underdrive pulley that will free up about 5 - 10 real horsepower. I'm going with a powerbond U/D pulley on mine...
I checked mine for wobble frequently after reading many posts on CF... all was well until it suddenly failed at 79k miles - no warning-- outer part crawled forward launching the a/c belt.
powerbond balancer? where do they sell those? the guy i was refering to owns his own garage (him and his father) and theyve owned several vettes c4's and a c5 so im in good hands as far as having any work done...they used gm replacement...is the powerbond superior?
