Ive had it for awhile. The performance is not affected. If its a piston, can that be changed without going through a rebuild?
just got back home and listened to your video. sorry dude, that is not normal. and it is not piston slap. this type of video, and listening on a computer, at least mine, is not like hearing it in person, but it sounds a lot like a bad rod bearing i had in a 305 once. it ran forever, and got quieter with heat also. that doesn't mean that's what it is, but you definately have a problem. drive it sensible and it may go quite a while until you can get a serious diagnosis and go from there.
sorry

So what am I looking at here? A rebuild or can it be repaired?

Well if it is a rod bearing then it can be repaired but you will need to tear down the motor to do so.

i think everyone is blowing this WAY out of proportion.

first, stop worrying.

second. Take a rubber hose or something similar and put it to different parts of the motor and listen to where the noise is coming from. BUT BE CAREFUL!!!!

my motor is noisy as hell. i just chalk it up to being the aftermarket heads and belt drive system.

here is a good video of piston slap.

I am pretty familiar with piston slap at least on small engines. I have a Yanmar tractor and if you dont know much about them just about every single one has piston slap for a little while upon startup. Its a horrid sound and will last a long time when its ~20 outside. I just dont think it sounds like piston slap and it just has a deep sound to it.

have you ever heard the piston slap that we're talking about? it resembles lifters that need adjusted. that video is not piston slap. at least not the level of which anyone considers normal, given the facts that explain why it happens in these motors.
i don't think anybody is blowing it out of proportion. just advising the op that he has a noise that is not normal. so do you.

of course your video and claim of nothing wrong could be a joke and you've already torn down the motor.

To my ears, that sounds like a valve, not pistons. The frequency is too slow.
Piston slap is usually all the pistons, not just one.
That sounds like one valve, to me.
Either use a hose as was mentioned, or a long screwdriver right on your ear and touched on the valve cover while running. You will hear all kinds of sounds, but that tapping will stand out. And it will be on one side only.
Not on the fuel rail cover.

That Saturn in the video? If that's piston slap, I'd say the piston was busted. Or a rod bearing was failed.

Do the "stethescope" trick.

That video i posted is just one i saw browsing on youtube. and its a saturn. them things suck anyways.
BUT
I have NEVER owned or heard a car that has ZERO valvetrain/belt/engine noise. And thats why i say people are blowing things out of proportion. Im not saying its impossible he doesnt have a problem. But i have heard noises not associated with the motor.

Show me a silent valvetrain and I'll show you an engine that isn't running!

sure there are noises, but there are expected noises, and noises that indicate a problem. determination has to be made as to which is present.
what was pink floyd's line, "it's not the normal noises in here" or something like that?

That does NOT sound like piston slap my friend! Try taking the belt off and start the car and run for a few seconds. If the noise isn't there look for a pully, tensioner, or other problem to do with belt driven stuff.
I don't think its a serious problem.

If it's a rod bearing you'll have low/no oil pressure.

Oil pressure is normal, car runs fine.

Im now starting to think it may be the AC pulley. That was always a bit noisy at startup. the sound also seems to be coming from that area. Im gonna have it looked at today or tomorrow.

Its easy enough to eliminate any of the accessories by just pulling the belts off, it wont even take ten min to do. Now the ac belt will be a little harder to get off but still not too bad.

i have to say you got me on that one. the video was so dark and sideways camera work and all, i didn't even pay attention to the visual, just the audio.
i thought you were putting that out as your noise that you thought was piston slap or aftermarket heads or drive belt system or whatever

bottom line here, and i hope everyone agrees, is that it is not piston slap. what it is needs to be determined, and repaired.
hope for a simple fix.

I would have never guessed that one but it does sound like something big is loose.
