So I am looking into buying a corvette and got the carfax--i found out that one year it was reported at 72,000 miles and two years later reported at 151,000 miles (the year prior to the 72k the car was driven only 10k miles)
Now the next owner purchased the vehicle and registered it with 102k miles and it was registered with an inconsistent odometer reading. After the inconsistent reading the car was issued a "Exceeds Mechanical Limits Title"
The current owner then bought the car at 102k miles and he is adamant that the car is not a rollover or rollback. Owner says he took it to the shop and "clusters" were the original ones (im not a car expert so i dont know what that means)
Now the car is at 110k miles which seems to follow in perfect order wit the previous mileage reports--without the 151k jump.
Now obviously the car does not roll over at 99k, so could someone shed light on this situation? Is it more likely to be a DMV error or what?
Sorry if i posted this in the wrong section, I am new to this board and was unsure where to put it.
It sounds like there was a mistake in reporting somewhere. It is not easy to change the odo reading on modern cars, and its really not worth it to change it from 151k to 110k. Keep in mind though that if you but it then this will stay with it so when you go to sell it the issue will come back up. I personally would pass on it unless its a real real good deal
What state are you in ? In Mo anything ten years or older is exempt and you can file for new title and it comes back with a few stars where the mileage would normally be.

If you plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off, then go for it and don't worry about the title stipulation. However, I would probably find another car - good deal or not.
The Delaware DMV wrote the wrong mileage down on my Mercedes and when I went to get it inspected the next time I got the same kind of thing. They wrote on the title that there was a problem with the mileage. That will be there when I go to sell it.

Lol, this is kind of what i was looking for--chronologically speaking the jump in mileage made no sense. But, i felt like i was excusing myself cause i want the car. I'm glad to know that this really happens, though i am sorry for any difficulty you have in selling your car.
and i do plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off. this has been a lifelong dream..even though im not really that old.
Someone probably looked at it and reported Kilo instead of miles at one time. It's very difficult to prove or get changed at carfax. They require a letter from the DMV stating the problem, and good luck getting that.
